Almost exclusively ethernet. I only use wifi for the iDevices.

Assuming we are talking internet only -- wifi. why bother with extra hardware?

Maybe you have a dozen or so other device that are only wifi capable, and you like to leave as much wireless bandwidth available for them as you can. Maybe you like having a dedicated line for your desktop machine that cannot be compromised by wireless signals.

I only use WiFi on location when nothing else is available, and I always bring my USB/ethernet adapter, jic.

Ethernet.
I need to find a wifi adapter that works with the G5 so I can get it off the kitchen table and back where it belongs.

Both. One Desktop and one laptop plus 2 iPhones and 2 iPads on wifi, 2 Desktops on ethernet. Oh, and the Apple TV is on wifi.

Apartment building is too old to run Ethernet conveniently to the desktop computer.

Both.

Ethernet were convenient for Macs, WiFi for my 'Book and iDevices.

those of you saying 'both'... I wasn't asking about laptops and ipods etc... just desktop computers.

and frankly, I'm amazed that more don't simply use wifi, but my iMac is tethered to enet...

Both. The router is next to all of our home theater components (including a Windows 7 HTPC), so any devices that have an Ethernet port are wired into that. I'm not inclined (read: too lazy) to run cable upstairs, so I repurposed an old router as an access point for the iMac and printer (which has no Wi-Fi) up there.

Kids moved the router around and that bamboozled my network, so the mini runs on 802.11 ac. One of these days I'll put it all back the way its supposed to be. In the meantime... eh, Netflix...

I have our two minis on Ethernet over powerline. I like the slightly more secure nature of Ethernet for desktops and they are on the second level where the WiFi is less robust. If Ethernet is an equally easy option for a stationary desktop, I would always choose that.

Same here. iMac is wired but sometimes I need to turn on wi-fi.

Son has gaming PC he built on dual band WI-Fi card, too lazy to run Ethernet to his room (read: other projects around house). He had an Ethernet cable running down the hall to his room, then his brother (college) suggested a dual band card he uses and we have been cable free. Wife hated “almost tripping” on the cable. Latency was an issue along with poor reception on the old card he had, new card has external antenna that sits on top of computer not in back.

We do. And my macs are wrapped in tinfoil for the second part. RollingEyesSmiley5

Maybe Im just lucky with my wireless net. Router is 5 feet off the ground in the middle of the house on top of an armoire hidden behind a clock. Nothing blocks the signal. Ping is always under 20ms, and every device in the house runs on the 5 GHz channel and gets 55/15 (or very close to it) all the time, every time. No one ever waits for the net here.

Running ethernet would be a PITA and would gain me nothing.

Ethernet and almost all of my Macs have built-in Ethernet ports.

Data travels better through copper than it does through air.

The PC that is next to the modem is ethernet.
The Mac Mini that was in my office was ethernet until I moved it to another room and just went wifi because it was supposed to be only temporary.
Everything else is wifi.
One modem with wifi and two apple routers and it all just works.

So, both, but if I had my druthers both desktops would be ethernet.

Ethernet. I get 100Mbps down, and I'm not even sure if my wifi can keep up with that speed. My Directv receiver is about 6 feet from my AEBS, and sometimes when I try to stream stuff, it tells me my wifi isn't fast enough. I hooked up a switch and ran cat 6 cable through the attic to the other side of the house so my wife can be directly on ethernet too.

Both. Ethernet is primary but macOS wants WiFi on too, presumably for location services and AirDrop (among other things).

Oh, you mean the computers in the rest of the house, too?

Yeah, both the kids' and media center computers are on WiFi as latency is not a prob and all are 802.11ac. My stuff's ethernet but I'm located roughly 4 feet away from the router so I made the effort of adding another tangle to the bird's nest.

You are gonna have to explain "better" to me. Data is data.

That could be your ABES, depeding on its age. 802.11 ac can reach 166 MBps. The router I rent from ATT Uverse and stream to everywhere in the house (including roku, fire and DTV boxes) seems to be a AC model. Ive never seen the slow wifi prompt.

Both, but we have a few subnets going on, and the towers can simply and effectively connect to three at the same time w/o breaking a sweat, so it's easy to share, edit and print stuff w/o swapping cables or network prefs. That said, I still prefer enet for desktops so as not to gleep bandwidth from those that need it... it's amazing how a couple of streamers, and a couple of facetimers can compromise a supposed 100MB connection... which seems to top out at 60MB over wifi anyway when tested while nobody else is online.

iMac sits on the desk above router and cable modem via ethernet.

Macbook pro is also usually on the desk too - extra ethernet cable is long enough to reach but usually on WiFi unless doing heavy duty downloads. .
