I view it as something that already happened starting with 10.7 Lion, and they're still trying to complete it.

Apple went out of their way to say they would not merge OS X and iOS. I think this means Apple is going to slowly cripple OS X, until everybody has migrated to an iOS device.

I can't imagine a complete re-write like os 9/X happening in the next ten years, but who knows?

Apple already delivers lame inconsequential updates to OS X. As soon as they start offering iOS on laptops and desktops OS X will fade into the night. Hopefully it will open the door for someone else but I suspect the golden years of computers are over. We will be stuck with lame devices that can’t do any serious work.

If Jobs were still alive, I think by now he would be developing OS XI. As things are, I have a hard time imagining Apple making that level of R&D investment in the Mac again.
