DEEP in the backcountry, a solo woman runs into a mountain lion...

I LOVE watching youtube videos of other people's backpacking trips. This gal is either THE best or 2nd best of them all imo (depending on my mood).

She's currently hiking the Continental Divide Trail.

Here's a link - the encounter starts at 3:58

[youtu.be]

If you want some great free entertainment, watch her doing the Pacific Crest Trail - there's a 2 hour edit or you can watch the dozens of installments. GREAT stuff. She's got a great eye and gets remarkable shots with wide angle and super closeup adapters - all filmed on an iP7 (the CDT on an iP8)

Come on now, you'd be looking for that long lens in your camera bag.

Any competent hiker knows you don't run/act like prey.

She didn't. She played a harmonica run.

I think
maybe, tho
the Cat
was hoping she'd pull out a banjo.

Good thing it wasn't an accordion because the lion probably would have thought she was wounded and in terrible agony and attacked.

My kid was fooling around on a harmonica one day and suddenly the cat appeared scratching at their door.

I let the (female) cat in and she went up and nipped the kid.

I figured she either thought he was an animal in distress or she was trying to say "stop making that horrible, horrible noise"

Actually, with mountain lions, the prevailing advice is to be agressive; make lots of noise, throw rocks, etc. The mountain lion's behavior is disturbing at first, that long direct stare is a sign of potential aggression. When it starts averting its gaze and twitching its ears, it is nervous. Most mountain lion attacks are on lone people weighing less than 100 pounds. Cool sighting and nice video!

Remember, it's the cat's home. The hiker is the trespasser.

Not everybody loves the harp.

Had I not known this video had a happy ending, I would have predicted the worst, based on that few minutes of the cat apparently sizing-up the hiker.

Tough call on chucking rocks at it at that point, but that's the prevailing wisdom. I wonder what would have happened had she broke out a decent rendition of Finger Tips Part 1.

I've followed that incident with great interest. The mountain lion was definitely not acting normally. The victim blew it by separating from his friend. Sad story.
