In the dark ages, we called these HTPCs, or HTMacs. Now there are a lot more options; I just changed mine out this afternoon, and was curious about what others are using. None of these are exclusionary, i.e., if for instance you use a Mac and Plex and also have a cable box, please just check your "Mac + Plex" and don't worry about standard broadcast/cable TV sources for our purposes.

Mac + Kodi. But the front end was recently moved to a Skylake NUC to support 4K/60 h.265. Back end is still a Mac w/ 20TB.

I should have included a "PC/Linux box" option.

I have an ApTV 2, too old to do much more than radio & weather now.
The Roku 2 HD w/Plex still passes as long as the distance ain't far.
Roku 4 HD wPlex does the heavy lifting VIA FiOS MoCA.

Hard to construct a poll and take everything in to account.

Tell me about it.

Where're the ßetaMax and S-VHS options?!

I considered going to a NUC when the ancient Core2Duo MacBook (broken monitor, operating in closed-lid mode) that I've been using for the last five years indicated it was about to give up the ghost. Then I remembered the wife's Mac mini that we replaced over Christmas, it's a mid-2011 and basically the most advanced Mac with an IR port that you can force to use Front Row (in Lion) with Apple Remote. Took a while to find a version of Lion that I could load, but after I got it up and running it works great.

Back end is a Hackintosh server, ~15TB.

Using a WDTV, but looking at options for when it gives up the ghost.

The Asus O!Play HDP-R1 is nice, but expensive at $300. The Leelbox Q2 is missing an optical audio out, but is $60 and does everything else.

Nicely done. Until recently our front end was also a 2011 Mac Mini and it handled almost all 1080p h.265 material but during some complex scenes it would start dropping frames. We recently got a 4K TV and our Skylake NUC was freed from its previous assignment so it was a good fit. We just use a decent wireless KB/trackpad with it, less convenient than the FR remote though. That 2011 Mini is now my main work machine.

Been a TWC/Spectrum customer for the last four years, but I am on the brink of ditching that and using my ATV 4K w/DirecTVNow as my primary content source. It's not gonna suck saving $130/month.

It is what it is.

It costs that much money because it's no longer made.

I paid $50-60 for it 8 years ago.

Mac with VLC/Firefox/Air Server + TiVO.

Used to use Plex ...Sometimes run a very old version of Plex which VLC will work with over the LAN or VPN.

But the versions from the last year or so require contact with their servers. Can't restrict it just to LAN traffic now. Although they promise not to share your private info, they won't let you set it up with various gadgets (TiVO) without registering. They also use 3rd party services that profit off of reselling people's otherwise-private data, so Plex is on my sh!t list. I just don't trust them anymore.

Yeah, I don't like Plex either. Great core technology, but everything else about it is pretty awful.

TV antenna mounted on the side of the house peeking over the roof and thru the trees . It has been pointing the wrong way since just before the Superbowl sometime.

I went with "other."
We get local channels via OTA antenna and use Roku for Netflix, Hulu, and Amazon Prime.
We have an AppleTV, but stopped using it.

I voted AppleTV but I primarily use the Plex interface ever since Apple scrambled their own interface.

Wheres the "I'm M A V I C" option?

Windows Media Center. It's still the best thing out there. I'd get an xbox if it allowed a cable card adapter. MS is preventing companies from selling those.

I have a Mac as an iTunes server for my home library to an ATV.

I also have a Tablo for OTA/antenna, but it also runs through the ATV.

Any we get DirecTV Now, mostly for live sports.

It's far more complicated than it should be, but it did dump cable.

Roku was a pretty big miss. As of 2017 at least, it was the top streaming device and growing.

I got tired of waiting for my actual Apple TV, so I got a smart TV, and found it made enough baby steps to usability that I don’t often bother with the ATV any more. sad smiley

I think Apple really dropped the ball with TV. Yes, they have no profit margin, blah, blah, blah. They said the same thing about cell phones. They coulda been a contenda.

Oh, and mostly we just take free OTA stuff plus Netflix. One local off-brand channel is all Star Trek, all evening long, starting with Original, then TNG, then on from there after I go to sleep. Between that, Netflix and PBS (and the occasional guilty pleasure on the big 4) what more do you really need?

Max Mini '12 + Netflix and Amazon Prime. Do the last two count as "software?"

That's a bit of a "yes and no" answer. I had in mind devices to play back local content, but I'm old. As streaming becomes the norm, that changes the equation for how dependent the viewer is on any particular hardware or software solution.
