Coiled Metal Yardstick?

I used to have a coiled spring-metal 'yardstick' or tape.

It was very handy and lightweight. It was something like a tape measure without the case, and just 36" or 39" long.

Unwound, it would snap into yardstick form and it could be used/handled as one would a yardstick. Laid flat, it would have a slightly convex shape. Bend it and it snapped into a coil.

I'm looking for a replacement but can't find one. I thought it might have been made by Lufkin, but they don't have anything like it at their site. It might have been a promotional item.

Does anybody have a link to such an item?

Never seen one that coiled.

Are you sure you aren't remembering it wrong? There are lots of sticks that fold in different ways.

I know of the coilable spring steel ones; I saw one at a thrift store a few weeks ago. It might still be there!

I had one about 40 years ago. It had advertising on it. I believe my Dad got it from a salesman at his work. If you do a Google search for "metal roll up yardstick", you can see several images of them. It looks like they were mainly an advertising gimmick. Doesn't look like they have been available for quite awhile.

My late brother, antique tool dealer and collector had a collection of them. I don't think they're made anymore.

cyclemax, this is it!

It was a Lufkin, alright. That wasn't the ad on it, but that is the exact thing.

I have no idea where I got it, but it was always super handy. I may just look in some old boxes packed away. I'd like to have one again, just not enough to pay ~$15 for it.

Thanks for the assist. I tried a bunch of search words and phrases and got nada.

I quess I do know the difference between a coil and folding.

How about just cutting off a standard meta tape measure rule to the desired length?
Wouldn't it be the what you are looking for?

"Slap ruler" seems to be the term for the 9-12 inch ones.

I was going to say something like this. The main issue would be smoothing/finishing the ends without compromising the coating. It will be a little easier if you have hardened scissors/metal-snips.

Aside from personal nostalgia, is there any benefit of a coiled 3' ruler over a 3' tape measure?

The coil is about 1.75" in diameter and 1" wide.

If dropped, there is almost zero chance of anything breaking. Nothing to stop retracting. I like that it can be stowed on a hook or even nail somewhere handy .

It's big strength for me is it becoming a yard stick, much easier to use that way than a skinny tape of the same length. Much easier to measure overhead height or depth. And I don't have to hold the other end.

There is no tape to rule them all. I have a few, but that coil is has it's place, so I hope I find mine.

Yep, size and weight.
Had one of them myself until inadvertent bends caused it to break. sad smiley
