The Mac SE/30 introduced in 1989 was $4,369.
Equivalent to $8,625 in 2017.

Right after I buy a 2TB drive to keep my Late 2013 in the game! Of course, I'm not about to spend $6k+ for a 4TB model! So I imagine I'll get a few more years out of my Late 2013. But at least these are the first compelling MBP models to consider upgrading to in a long time.

[seekingalpha.com]

Their specs are a bit misleading as they state "up to 256GB storage", but that is only the baseline amount for the 2.2GHz 15" model. Apple offers up to 4TB SSDs on the 15" models, and 1 or 2TB for the 13" models.

Comparatively -- and just for comparison, mind you -- an Asus i7 with 32GB RAM and a 2TB HDD/1TB SSD is around $2200. [www.amazon.com] Or about 1/3 the price.

Indeed, but I wager the difference in price that the MBP would tear it to pieces.

Beg my pardon. By entry level, I meant when you chose the first model 15" and then upgraded the RAM to 32GB. It comes as-is with 16GB.

Extra reasons to buy this external GPU housing.

Two Thunderbolt 3 ports

Four USB 3 ports

One HDMI 2.0 port

That isn't quite a like for like. The CPU's are nearly identical. It _IS_ possible to get a Windows PC with a SSD with nearly comparable performance, and you will be able to upgrade the PC storage (and RAM, and...) in the future. Apple is able to get faster speeds by soldering the SSD to the motherboard but think you would need to work to show the Mac was much faster. For nearly equivalent prices, it is possible to get a PC with a much faster onboard GPU, it also allows you to choose a brand of external GPU that accelerates your workflow the most. Apple still doesn't support Nvidia graphics as well as AMD.

I've been awaiting some upgrades and have been sitting on the fence for a year or now..... Having a 2 TB SSD is great and really gives me the space i want for the future. Now sure about the 16 vs 32 GB of RAM. I've had 16 GB in my mid 2012 and it seems ok, although running Windows 10 in Parallels seems to hog RAM.

What say they masses... 16 or 32?

If you have the money, do it. You'll never regret having "too much" RAM, just not having enough.

Late 2013? You mean 13" mid 2012, with a 2.5" SSD?

Night and day vs a new model. A 2.5" 500 MB/s SSD cant really compare to a 3000 MB/s flash drive in the new models. Let alone CPU and GPU.

Still, a "basic" config for a person who just wants something more than "basic" will still set you back close to 2K. 13" with 500 GB drive and 16 GB of ram = $1900. $2600 for a 15" model, same specs.

Definatetly an "investment" vs a computer

Damn, 17.3" screen (not 4K) and almost 7 pounds. Almost the size of a tabliod piece of paper 11" x 16" x 1"... Not really a "traveling" laptop.

Maybe theres a 15" with closer specs.

And what version of OS X does it run?

Nope, Late 2013 Retina. OWC makes 2TB PCIe replacements now (picked one up in the last Garage Sale). [eshop.macsales.com] Although when I got it, it wasn't physically as big as the Apple SSD, and my immediate thought was why don't they make a 4TB version! (Probably cost/heat reasons).

I would say no, at least for machines ordered with an SSD. Since the advent of SSDs, disk access is so fast that the benefit a typical user used to experience from having more RAM have essentially vanished.

Professional users, OTOH, should probably go with the max RAM option.

EDIT: Home users who run virtualization on their Macs might want to consider the RAM upgrade.

They have not done much about the keyboard issues, except to make them quieter, from what I’ve read so far. Not that I’d be in the market in any case. No compelling need for one, and even if I needed a new computer, I would not want these. I just don’t want to deal with the port issues.

I'd happily take a 17" MacBook Pro again, regardless of weight/footprint -- my old one was a fantastic traveling workstation. Not everyone cares about those aspects; some of us want a MacBook Pro where the Pro part means something.

This appears to me to be one of the first worthwhile upgrades in quite some time.

But I wouldn't buy one yet because I'm so pessimistic about Apple these days that I expect there will be some significant problem. It seems like Apple is due for another round of video card failures or something. RollingEyesSmiley5

So is the iMac update coming?

I bit on the 2016 update because I thought my 2012 MBP was on its last leg. Apple store was able to revive it, so my 2016 MBP is doing duty (poorly) as my office desktop. I'm holding out for the 2018 iMac, which should last me to retirement.

So is the iMac update coming?

Most likely, but if they go with the same Intel chips, its an incremental upgrade, not revolutionary.

If they pass down some of the features from the iMac Pro it could make them more of an upgrade -- like the faster drives and faster ram -- but that could also comprimise some things. (no more ugradeable ram)

Even so, you would need to be using software that took advantage of the Xeon processors and the Vega GPU. Not much does.

27" iMac 3.8 i5, 2TB Fusion drive and 8 GB Radeon 580 is under 2K. Add 32 GB of ram for 40 GB and a huge backup drive... under $2500. Even doing print graphics like I do, that iMac would be more than enough HP to last many years.

Unfortunately, loss of upgradeable ram seems likely with the direction Apple is headed. It may make more sense to pick up a pre-upgrade iMac. I haven't stressed a computer in years, so an older iMac should be fine.

Looks like they finally discontinued the trusty old 13" with optical drive. Seems to me it was still available only a few months ago. When did it disappear from the bottom of Apple's MBP page?

Still got my mid-2010, anyway, now with 1TB SSD.

Well, yes, and no. its about upfront costs. and 3rd party upgrades.

If you order a 27" iMac today, and spec it with 32 GB ram, its an extra $400. Ouch.

If you order it with 8, then buy 32 GB from our sponsor, its $419. Ouch?

Weirdly, if you order it with 8, then add 32 GB, for 40, its $350.

And if ram ever dropped in price, maybe you snag it later?

No one has really bothered compaling about 15" MBP ram, since it comes with the max as is. Now that theres a 32 GB option, its back on the table...
