Help! Which DeWalt Drill Driver/Impact Combo Kit should I get?
Posted by: mattkime

I have an old Ryobi drill which needs a new battery and I'm tempted to simply get a new drill and impact driver. They'd be used for odd jobs around the house and car maintenance (assisting in wheel swaps).

I suspect both options are overkill but still insist on overthinking this.

Amazon deal ~ $169ish for both these items - [www.amazon.com] and [www.amazon.com]

- I'm in the market for a socket set (I have a crappy one that needs replacing) so I'd actually use the bundled set. (prime day special)
- Brushed motors, 2x 1.3 Ah batteries

OR

Home Depot - $210ish - [www.homedepot.com]

- Higher build quality
- Bushless motors
- 2 Ah and 4 Ah batteries
- plastic case

---

Which one should i get?

On the DeWalt the Amazon deal is better, I actually bought that very one a month ago.
You can get very decent after market batteries on Amazon as well at a great discount....

The kit from home depot is considerably better. It's brushless and will easily blow that entry level kit away both for battery life and torque, not to mention the 4ah battery has far more reserve. I have numerous 20v Dewalt tools and I'm continually impressed by how great they work.

Ridgid tools have a lifetime service and free replacement batteries for life if you register them.

Looks like you can get the drill driver and impact driver with 2 1.5Ah batteries and 2 4.0Ah batteries as a free add-in for $179.

I have no idea whether they are any good or not but the free service and free batteries for life seem like a deal.

I double agree.

Check out CPO Outlet. They have great deals on reconditioned tools from all the major brands.

My last bit of advice: forgo the 18 or 20v tools - much too big and heavy - the Milwaukee M12 tools are my go to on 99% of the jobs i do. I rarely use any of the M18 tools that I have. (I bought them thinking the opposite would be true, but the 12v too!s do just about everything well.

I end up using my impact driver 90% of the time where I had been using my drill.

That impact driver will not do lug nuts. You need a 1/2” one for that.

I'm currently switching over to Ryobi 18V from Sears Craftsman C3 19.2V line. I like how many different tools Ryobi has and the price. Not something I use everyday so good enough for me. The C3 line is slowly dying, don't want to put anymore money into it. The C3 tools are fine but the batteries suck. Got two 3.0Ah batteries and a 1/4" Hex Impact Brushless Driver for Father's Day.

I agree with C(-)ris. Get a full cordless 1/2 inch impact wrench if you want you lug nuts torqued. The impact drills can only spin off wheel nuts after they have been loosened up.

I was looking at similar kits yesterday, based on comments should I reconsider my pick of Porter Cable?

It doesn't sound like your needs are demanding. Consider Bosch:

Lighter battery but quite adequate. $139 + tax.

Ryobi and Milwaukee are owned by the same company. As are Dewalt and Porter Cable.

The DeWalt 20 volt 1/2 inch impact wrench is a beast. Works better than the majority of the corded impact wrenches that are available. I love mine. No need to run extension cords or an air line for pneumatic wrench.

Add in DeWalt's Power Station for 120v, 15 amp service for remote work or emergency power.

The Bosch tools are great, but Milwaukee offers many more tools in their line that use the same batteries.

This is a great starter kit for $199: HD M12.

The 2 tool combo is frequently available for $99 (although not currently).

For wheel swaps, you need heavier duty, as discussed.

Right, very often Porter-Cable is the same tool as a similar DeWalt, with couple fewer bells and whistles, and priced a bit lower.....

Free,

Unrealistic for most people. We have a pneumatic carton stapler. Love it! But, it's useless without our warehouse's compressor and having to deal with the airline all the time is inconvenient. So inconvenient we bought a retractable reel for the stapler's hose and keep it disconnected until we actually need to use it.

Air tools, air tools...

The $300 DeWalt cordless impact blows away almost all if not all pneumatic impacts, especially if you have a typical consumer air compressor. It's really impressive.

I decided to keep the home depot order. I decided the price difference wasn't worth the hassle. I opened it up and I'm really happy. BIG upgrade over my old ryobi.
