Aging Mac Pro 4,1 with Yosemite - should I go to El Cap?
Posted by: JoeM

My Quad-Core 2.26 GHz Mac Pro 4,1 runs rock solid with Yosemite installed but I can't update a number of applications without going to El Capitan now, which is the end of the line for this MP's supported OS updates. I don't use many OS features or Mail. This drive handles my graphic design, photo editing and web browsing and development.

Any issues that I should be aware of before doing the update to El Cap? Currently waiting for the new Mac Pros to show up in 2019 when I'll decide on a new MP or possibly an older trash can MP or iMac

TIA.

I moved from Yosemite to El Capitan on a 2010 MacBook Pro for similar reasons. El Capitan has been stable and worked well.

By contrast, I've not gone to Sierra or High Sierra.

Good luck.

At this time, I haven't seen any case where 10.10 is better than 10.11 or 10.12 on the same hardware.

Yep. This is a very easy firmware upgrade, and it opens the pathway to more contemporary MacOS versions like High Sierra - been running as a 5,1 for years.

This. And I even upgraded the RAM as well as put in new processors. For all intents and purposes, my 4,1machine is now a 5,1 in firmware and hardware.

I would have advised you to upgrade to El Cap the moment I knew you were on Yosemite. Glad to hear your Yosemite experience was better than that of many other users.

El Cap was great, but I will say that the version of Mail that ships with Sierra is the best version in years. Super fast. The rest of Sierra has worked well for me, also (aside from the ongoing migration from a useful GUI) -- my vote is for Sierra.

It is what it is.

JoeM,

Go with El Cap. It runs very nicely on my 2007 C2D iMac 2.8 with 6GB RAM.

Mr. Curmudgeon, on several OSes and an ego trip.

EC is easy, some apps break under Sierra, more break under HS.

Flash it to a 5,1 and out 10.13 on it.

I was thinking of this. Thanks for the link. I need to make sure I won't have any issues with my Pro Tools 11 HD Native setup, which runs on another internal drive, using Mt Lion OS ( I'm a real OS dinosaur old fogey smiley

I had looked into the processor upgrade as well but not having Thunderbolt I/O kind of is a deal killer for me so I figured I wouldn't spend the money on upgrading the processor.

Thanks everyone. I'll go to EC for now and if Pro Tools is ok with it, then the firmware upgrade.

Yes, thanks. I'm using their HD Native version with their PCIe card and Omni HD I/O.

I've Got El Cap running now. Seems fine except I got a message my Avid Coreaudio Manager app won't run on it. They probably have an updated version.
