I have heard of Rx for methadone for back pain(in CA). Has anyone tried it? Drs can prescribe it for pain without any special license but other uses need a special license.

It's a heavy duty narcotic. Long lasting. A user will need to titrate down rather than 'stop' to avoid withdrawal. It's a Schedule II narcotic, and depending on the state may require a lot of testing and monitoring to avoid abuse. Pain management doctors are HEAVILY monitored in many states, to the point that most of them have to raise their prices to meet the cost of record keeping and testing.

I have seen it used for back pain, supposedly less addictive than some of the other opioids.
I haven't seen anyone eager to wean off of methadone or any of the other forms- suboxone, subutex, etc.
When I took care of methadone addicted newborns, it took anywhere from 3 weeks to 2 months to get them weaned off.
