Mac Pro & Power Mac Towers Roll Call. Who still has one?
Posted by: pRICE cUBE

Trying to power along with my 2009 quad core 2.4ghz. I upgraded recently from a 2006. Hope to either increase CPU, RAM, and video card eventually.

Got rid of all the pre-Intel towers awhile back, but still have a six pack and a twelve pack pair of Mac Pro 5,1 cheesegraters. Looking forward to something to replace them with. Something hopefully more energy efficient.
Hurry Up!
Please!

I'm on a 2009 2.26 Quad Core and still have a G4 Power Mac sitting right next to it, although I probably haven't turned it on in several years. Waiting to see what 2019 brings us for new Mac Pros before I upgrade.

Upgraded all but CPU - (even upgraded the firmware from 4,1 to 5,1) and the CPU is probably next if Apple doesn't get it together with their MacPro line.

Not feeling very confident Apple will come through, and this is a machine Apple replaced a leaky G5 with - so it's been a LONG, LONG time since there's been a new - bought and paid for - MacPro in this house!

(Though the MBP parade continues unabated… LOL)

Two Mac Pros. One is a rarely used 2006 that is my Wayback Machine, the other is my 2010 that I worship shamelessly. I also still have my MDD, plus my spare MDD that I bought cheap (cheaper than a replacement power supply) to use when the first one’s power supply died; a Smurf that was given to me; a Sawtooth; my 9600 and my 7600. Some of these have not been fired up in a long time. There is also the G5 that I got cheap on eBay when both MDDs were acting up.

My 2010 Mac Pro will not be retired anytime soon.

I still have my smurf an a G4 tower that has some old back-up stuff on it. Neither fired up in over a year.

I love my Mac Pro. It's a 2012 that came as a quad 3.2Ghz. I upgraded the CPU to a hex 3.33GHz.

I also still have my 2006 2.66GHz sitting unused simply because I have been too lazy to get rid of it.

Way of the dodo.

Originally, they cost too much and too few options for compatible upgrades. And ram cost was outrageous. Had to move on. Needed 3 new machines to replace G5s, and 3 new MPs were not in my budget.

Boot drive is a SSD on PCI card. Mighty fast.

I use a 4,1 but I don't know for how much longer. Something is messed up and it has trouble playing videos. I assume it's because I'm still using 10.9.5 but I hate to monkey with it, lest my CS6 apps bit the shed.

I have a G4 Sawtooth with an upgraded CPU and 4 HDDs (the original and 3 others) in it. I still crank it up occasionally to use some software that no longer runs on the INTEL Macs. It runs fine but sounds like it's grinding corn. Probably a fan.

My wife has a G5 17" iMac that runs just fine also.

2009 Mac Pro 2.66 quad core.
It's still my primary Mac rockin' 10.6.8, but I've reluctantly had to use my 2012 i7 quad Mini more recently for productivity to develop with the newer FileMaker versions.

Two cheesgraters- 2010 upgraded to a hex 3.33 and a 2009 with the firmware upgrade and a hex 3.33. Jammed with HDs and a main SSD in each. Best Macs I've ever owned. Always wanted them but couldn't afford them until the past 2-3 years.

Son has a 2010 Mac Pro with the 2.8 GHz quad-core. He upgraded the video card to a GTX 680 a bit over a year ago.

I have a DA PowerMac G4 with a dual 1.73 GHz 7448 processor upgrade still. It has not been powered on for about a year, I have to replace a cooling fan that is going bad. Last powered up for transfer of old backups from a SCSI attached DLT cartridge drive.

Mac Pro (Early 2008)
2 x 2.8 GHz Quad-Core Intel Xeon
22 GB 800 MHz DDR2 FB-DIMM
ATI Radeon HD 5770 1024 MB
El Capitan 10.11.6

I had dual CD burners but the bottom one smoked earlier this year and I just pulled them both and set them outside.

I will get a new / newer Apple tower.
It is on my bucket list.

Then again for what I do.... but when I retire I may get my groove back.

Meanwhile I am experimenting with storage solutions.

I have 4 Mac Pro towers in my office. A quad 2.66 1.1 and 3 8 core 2.8 models. I also have a PowerMac G5 dual 1.8 machine as my main data server. It is loaded with a pair of Highpoint PCI-x RAID cards and over 60TB of drives.

12-core 2012 5,1 baby. 32 GB RAM, SSD on a PCI card as boot drive. USB 3 card, and 3GB ATI 7950 video card running two 4K monitors. Got it two years ago to replace my 2008 3,1, which faithfully served me for over 7 years. Was still running great. I'm hoping to get at least another 5 years out of this one. Hopefully there will be some kind of tower to replace it at that point. Not fond of the iMac or mini, and have no interest in having a laptop as my everyday computer.

Same here. Got a 2009 2.26GHz 8-core Mac Pro and a GigE dual-500 upgraded to dual 1.3GHz sitting next to each other.

haven't turned the GigE on in more than 5 years.

3,1 Quad core. It's limping along until either Apple comes out with a replacement or I go the Hackintosh/Linux route.

As of now, the critical point seems to be next spring when TurboTax no longer supports El Cap.

4.1 quad core 3.46Ghz, upgraded with firmware flash to be a 5.1, 1TB SSD, 16GB RAM, and USB 3.1 Gen2 PCIe card. It's my daily driver.

Thinking about eventually putting two SSDs in there via Apricorn or similar, or maybe a PCIe card with two NGFF sticks. Everyone says once you have an SSD, you don't really notice any difference from the RAID, but I'd to try it. Unless Apple comes out with a really rockin' Mini first. Or I cave and buy a recent iMac--but this Mac Pro is such a good value, it's hard to move on past it.....
