Mysterious observatory evacuation stirs alien conspiracy theories

Amanda Kooser/CNET

Reports that a Blackhawk helicopter and federal agents swooped in and inexplicably evacuated a remote part of New Mexico, including a prominent solar observatory, has some corners of the internet predictably atwitter about a possible alien coverup.

FBI agents showed up at the Sunspot solar observatory in tiny Sunspot, New Mexico, on Friday and shut down the facility, evacuating the local area, including the Sunspot post office.

"There was a Blackhawk helicopter, a bunch of people around antennas and work crews on towers, but nobody would tell us anything," Otero County Sheriff Benny House told the Alamogordo Daily News. "I don't know why the FBI would get involved so quick and not tell us anything."

Five days later, the observatory's website confirms the entire facility is closed to both staff and the public until further notice. . .

This observatory dates back to the 1940s. Why the secret closure and evacuation? A terrorist threat? Can't imagine why they would bother.

Anyone here live nearby?

Of course, it does.

Maybe there's a classified dual use for the observatory and the black project needed to do some work in private.

Reports that a Blackhawk (sic) helicopter and federal agents...
ROTFL

well duh!
Black Hawks (S-70 & UH-60) are used by every Federal Agency for rapid transport of personnel. Even the LA County FD flies an S-70. Sure as hell beats driving thru the boonies.
Seems modern 'journalists' have decided that any Black Hawk spotted is a sure sign of nefarious government activity.

At least they didn't say 'black helicopter...'

I don't recall them having helos, though they did eventually move to jets.

There are definitely some strange circumstances though. I haven't read any recent (newer than 12hours old) reports, but it seemed yesterday that the facility is not operated by the government, the Sherrif's office wasn't involved in any way and they're just as clueless as everyone else. The FBI simply slipped in, evacuated everyone and locked down the facility. That's kind of strange. If the FBI is involved it means that it is something involving a federal crime or crossing state lines.

this is an interesting event and we should follow it closely. Presumably, if they were rushing in as a result of an Alien conspiracy, of course they would say they were the FBI. But does anyone verify that?

If the local post office was shut down as well, could it be that something potentially dangerous was delivered by mail to the observatory?

May have something to do with the " 8 to 10 metric tons of mercury " that's part of the support bearing. See Wiki article.

Possibly, but if it was a biohazard of some sort one would expect to see the EPA as well as the FBI there along with lots of guys in hazmat suits.

Good point.
I was thinking along the lines of a possible catastrophic structural failure.

An equally good point. A literal flood of mercury could definitely ruin your day. That doesn't explain the closing down of the local post office, though.

The place is only a couple of miles (as the crow flies, probably double that or more by road) from Alamogordo on a mountain that would provide a good view of Holloman Air Force base, so perhaps someone is suspected of watching something besides the sun from the observatory?

FBI mum about sudden closing of solar observatory. Conspiracy theories fill the silence
BY LISA GUTIERREZ

September 13, 2018 05:22 PM
Mystery continues to surround the sudden shutdown last week of the national Sunspot Solar Observatory in New Mexico, which remained closed Thursday with little explanation offered.

The silence has given rise to guessing games and conspiracy theories bouncing around on social media about what happened at the facility in the Sacramento Mountains, especially given reports that the FBI was involved.

The observatory, near Alamagordo, was evacuated last Thursday, reported the Albuquerque Journal and other local media outlets. . .

“Sunspot apologizes for the continued closure of the facilities,” a statement on the observatory’s Facebook page said on Sunday. “The Association of Universities for Research in Astronomy (AURA) is addressing a security issue at the National Solar Observatory facility at Sacramento Peak, New Mexico and has decided to temporarily vacate the facility as a precautionary measure.

Aliens don't exist. Must have had to do with witches or ghosts.
