Lawrence, North Andover and Andover. Columbia Gas Company serves those communities, among others.

We had an entire street of homes near me go up because the gas company set the pressure too high. Fortunately nobody was killed.

Is this what happened:

(1) Gas lines became over-pressurized and were leaking.
(2) Leaking gas exploded if it was near an ignition source.

Boy, there has to be MULTIPLE equipment failures (along with human error) for the situation to get this bad.

It was not *very near* me... a number of miles away.

just read a post on reddit where some starbucks employees received an emergency alert recorded call from corporate saying there was a disaster in their area, to check with local authorities and their store manager and to shelter in place (though given the particulars maybe it should have said to get the hell out of dodge). the employees posting weren't in danger but they were impressed Starbucks has such a system in place (i didn't know either) as it could potentially save lives.

life in the modern age, though - they first ignored the calls since they didn't recognize the 800 number but when it kept calling they finally picked up.

Kudos for Starbucks

(and I would expect a Starbucks employee would use capital S, right?)

The Merrimac Valley towns (Lawrence, Andover, North Andover) are still in chaos today. A regular listener in Andover told me they had power back (electric power cut to help prevent more gas fires yesterday), but his gas was shut off, so no hot water or cooking.

The Columbia Gas Co. had no answer for the cause. NTSB, FBI are investigating, with large Boston gas/electric company Eversource helping. Most speculate it was a surge in gas pressure that flooded homes and apartment buildings.

Hard for me to understand (a) why there would be no fail-safe devices to prevent an high pressure surge from entering lines feeding the neighborhoods; (b) how high gas pressure could get past the meter. As for (a), if fail-safe valves exist, then either incompetence or malice must be a factor. Could the safety devices (assuming they exist) be disabled by software hackers?

As for (b), I guess we have to assume the meters are not designed to prevent dangerously high pressures. I can't imagine it would be hard to improve them. Our gas company routinely replaces the meters every N years (5?).

I like natural-gas heat (no-maintenance furnace) and cooking (nice, variable flame), but must admit this sort of thing is very worrisome.

amazing that only one person died. and even that was a chimney falling on a parked car, no one died inside any of those houses.
