Far too many to list here, I have been so very blessed! My parents took me to some very interesting places when I was young. Before I got married, I traveled to many interesting, and off the beaten path locations.

Back in 1985 my late wife and I took a three month long honeymoon, traveling around the world heading west. We did it with one carry-on bag each. We had no itinerary or reservations, other than our plane reservations. So many interesting places on that trip, including Nepal.

After that she got a job with UAL, we traveled the world far and wide courtesy of that!

Northwest Pakistan up to the Khyber pass, back in the 1980's. The region was not very secure, but nothing as bad as it is now. The clear beauty of a mountain morning, the call to prayer echoing over the hills, the scattered greenery. It was starkly beautiful.

Baluchistan, similar time frame, driving up a wadi (dry river bed) in midday, to see what looked like some weird trees in a shady bend in the riverbed. As we got closer the trees took the shape of a nest of snakes, the heads whipping every which way, watching us. And within 100 meters, we saw a herd of wild juvenile camels, who suddenly jumped up and ran away from us up a tributary. The sight of 20 or so young camels, running in a panic, legs splayed everywhere, was hysterically funny. We had to stop for a few minutes until we all finished laughing. No matter the language or culture, funny is funny !

Prudhoe Bay, Alaska back in the early '70s. I did warehouse work for an ARCO (Atlantic Richfield) subcontractor at the northern terminus of the oil pipeline. I got to experience -50ºF weather and, in the days before digital watches, no two "standard" watches ever showed the same time. It was not uncommon for there to be a thirty minute discrepancy (something about being so close to the North Pole)! I suspect that it was because of this discrepancy, I got to direct and park a C-130 cargo plane that was supposed to land, unload, be reloaded and off the ground in 30 minutes without shutting down completely (because the weather was extremely volatile; this episode is where I experienced the -50ºF temperature). When the person who was supposed to do the job didn't show up, I stepped up and did what I had seen the regular guy do and, the C-130 got back in the air while it was safe to take off). Driving on Alaska's North Slope, as far as you could see, there'd be nothing but snow (sort of like being out on the ocean).

Last week, I took a cruise out of Seattle, WA to three ports in southeast Alaska. It was the first time I'd been back to Alaska (I had a great time and, can recommend a cruise to Alaska).

Earlier this month, my wife and I went to Belize to celebrate our 20th Anniversary. It is a beautiful country. We stayed on a private island but also flew to the mainland to tour Mayan ruins and go cave tubing. On the way to the island, we took a helicopter flight over the Blue Hole. We also went snorkeling, fishing, and scuba diving.

For our 15th Anniversary, we went to Arenal, Costa Rica. Also a beautiful country with amazing flora and fauna. Hiking, horseback riding, and zip-lining on the slopes of a volcano and was great fun.

Athens, summer 1974.

A friend and myself had stayed on in Athens after our two female companions had flown home after we had been on the islands for two weeks. The day after they flew out the hostilities with Turkey over Cyprus started and the government closed all borders, stopped air travel and commandeered all the ferries for troop transport. Fortunately my friend's mother had remarried a Greek and we had the use of an apartment for the two weeks we were stuck there. During that time the colonels were booted out and there was partying in the street although my friend's stepfather warned us not to say we were from the UK as Britain had at times supported the colonels. They suggested pretending to be Australian. I had started to play backgammon and during the enforced holiday extension I was taught and coached by an ex Athens champion (family member).

Due to the lack of communication my family had no idea what was happening until I phoned from the airport when back in the UK.

Me? I had a fantastic time!

Paul

All of them.

The only place I'm in no hurry to ever go back to is mainland China. At least not the way we did it to all the tourist traps. As interesting as they are that's not the China I want to see if I go back.

We've traveled quite a bit but that was certainly the most interesting place.

I'm a lightweight in this category, but...

Canada (I know, hardly counts, but it was lovely)
Tijuana Mexico (were were on a tight timeline, and walked around for an hour. I consider it "unfinished business" to return there and at least have a taco and a beverage)
London, England, UK. (Twice and hope to go again.)
York, North Yorkshire, England, UK
Goldsborough Village, North Yorkshire, England, UK
"Once Brewed" area near Hadrians Wall, England.
Lindisfarne, England, UK.
Edinburgh, Scotland, UK.
Hollingworth Lake (Littleborough), England, UK
Bangkok, Thailand
Wuhan, China (hardly counts... 13 hour layover on the return from Bangkok).

I have a much longer list of places I WANT to go, and many of the places I listed I'd love to return to and stay longer and do more.

Listing only places that were interesting enough to spend some time exploring them, three days for small ones, a week for larger ones. An exception would be the Majdanek extermination camp, or Panerai killing fields, where one day was more than I could handle, but the places are significant and need to be experienced.

Istanbul, Turkey
Moscow, Soviet Union
Kaliningrad, military restricted area, Soviet Union
Grodno, Byelorussia
Vilnius, Panerai, Palanga, Lithuania,
Warsaw, Krakow, Lublin, Poznan, Gdansk, Malbork, Naleczow, Majdanek, Pulawy, Poland,
Brno, Czechia
Bratislava, Slovakia
Vienna, Salzburg, Austria
Budapest, Egger, Hortobágyi Pusta, Hungary
Zavidovice, Bosnia
Rijeka, Zagreb, Zadar, Sejn, Plitvice Lakes, Pula, Krk, Croatia
Ljubljana, Pivka, Vrhnika, Slovenia
Trieste, Montefalcone, Grado, Venice, Pordenone, Treviso, Milan, Italy
Paris, France
Amsterdam, Holland
Cologne, Dortmund, Dusseldorf, Leipzig, Germany
Singapore
Anji, Beijing, Bazhou, Dezhou, FengHuangCheng, Foshan, Guangzhou, Hongzhou, Jiangshan, Jingdezhen, Shanghai, Suzhou, Tianjin, Wujiang, Wuxi. Yantai, YiXing, Xiamen, Zhangjiajie Wulingyuan, China
Highlands, Saigon, Vietnam
Jodhpur, Bombay, Delhi, India
Mexico City Indios Verdes, Monterrey, Mexico.....

I'm not getting the laundry lists. I think this was supposed to be enlightening chat about various places one would recommend to visit, not a contest. At least edit the lists to include some reason why you thought the places were "interesting and worthwhile".

A laundry would be twice or thrice as long, each one of these places listed has something that is quite interesting. True, it is too long to mark each one with the appropriate highlights, but if you want to pick one, or two, I will illustrate the reason for it being listed...

Wichita, KS by train in 1956. The train was scary cool.
Bass Lake in the mid 60's when the Hell's Angels invaded. Scarier and cooler in it's own way.
Altamont Pass a few years later when the Hell's Angels invaded. Scarier still, but way cooler.
San Francisco in summer of 1967. Who doesn't like love? (OK, so it wasn't really travel, as I worked there, but those were interesting times.)
People's Park across the Bay after the love subsided... not taking chances, I wore my motorcycle helmet, while my cousin neglected to wear his, and got clobbered on his noggin by a cop swinging his baton. Cousin and Mrs. Cousin joined the Peace Corps shortly thereafter as his student deferment was about to expire, after they seriously considered moving to Canada.

My days of heavy travel were back when I was in the Air Force:

Tempelhof Air Base (Berlin Gemany) during the summer of 1983. The year KAL 007 was shot down. Berlin radar project for the electronic security group. You could watch commie fighters taking off on the radar scopes...

Lots of 486L Tropo scatter radio sites throughout the med.

Patch Barracks...Milstar terminal install (Headquarters of the European Command) Germany

Clear Air Force Station (Ballistic missile warning site) Alaska back when they had the old mechanical radar. The last time I checked, the huge parabolic reflectors still stand.

And so on...

Quetta, Northwest Pakistan. Didn't make it to the Khyber pass, though.
Great Barrier Reef, Australia
Karachi, Pakistan (lived there two years....dangerous and interesting at the same time
Bogota, Colombia (also two years...a lot more interesting than Karachi, but just as dangerous)
Bruge & Ghent, Belgium (very pretty cities)
Venice (one of my most favorite places)
Verona, Italy
Cinque Terra, Italy
Bangkok (VERY interesting)
Ljubliana, Slovenia (only place I've ever been where the restaurant menus had six pages of different kinds of pizzas)

One of the most profound places was visiting the Red Fort, THEN cross the river to the Taj Mahal in Agra, India.

The Red Fort has been captured and destroyed at least 5 times since the Taj was made, and by people from at least three different religions plus those from halfway around the world (British).

I've been to many places including classic capitals in Europe, and plenty of amazing places like the Eiffel Tower etc. They were all worth the visit.

However, the Taj transcends them all. It's truly Spectacular Beauty.

Been there 3 times, same impact each time.

YMMV.
