I preordered a Pixel 3

I know it's not a revolutionary step in phones. I have a Samsung now, and am done with them. I was leaning towards an iPhone, but ultimately what pushed me over the edge was the carrier.

Yes, the carrier. I went with Google's Project Fi. I had a grandfathered plan with Sprint for a long time, but they killed that, their coverage has gotten smaller and their prices larger. Just going through other carrier's websites was frustrating. They were slow loading, were poorly designed, made it tough to compare plans, and still had a long list of caveats.

Project Fi is $35/mo for two lines, then $10/GB up to 10GB and then the price is capped. So the most I'l spend is $135. If we don't use that much data, we spend less.

But then there were all of the other things like the fact it uses multiple carriers. No cancellation fee. No contract. Easily move between networks while on a call. International data is included at the same cost. International texting is free. No additional charge to use the phone as a wifi hotspot. No "you have a smartphone, so you need to pay more for your service." No "You want LTE? You need to pay more." Basically all of those bullet points for other carriers that are "yes, if you pay more" or "no" Project Fi has as just "yes, it's included."

And after doing the math, over two years, this will cost me at least $2100 less than if I had gone with iPhones and a basic Verizon plan. The $799 service credit for buying two phones helps with that.

It uses the Sprint, T-Mobile, and U.S. Cellular. It's mildly amusing that I'll now be using the same network for less than I was spending before, and I'll be able to roam to other networks with ease and without a reduction in speed.

FWIW, you can use an iPhone on Project Fi. You just need to activate the SIM with an android phone.

I did read up on that, and it was said that network switching wouldn't work. Data speeds would also be reduced.

We jumped on the T-Mo geezer unlimited deal as soon as it was offered, and the $60 all-in for two lines (now $70) is tough to beat. No Pixel option AFAIK, but for an extra $10/mo we also get an almost unlimited tablet... 2GB LTE, then slower, but most streaming is free at 480P and doesn't count against the LTE bucket. W/ your $800 credit, that's a lot to take into consideration. Good luck, I know you'll enjoy being away from Sprint.

We also kept our grandfathered Sprint plan for too long. Swapped the rest of the family lines to T-Mo's MetroPCS for $25/ea, supposedly unlimited, but slightly more restricted than real T-Mo, but keeps cell use affordable.

Yeah, I've been with Sprint for nearly 17 years.

My wife and I figured that taking photos is probably the most common thing we use the phone for. Texting behind that, and calls.

Do iPhones have a service that blocks spam callers?

You can block individual numbers after they call you.

Currently if other people report a number as being a spammer, and they call me, then my phone tells me that when they call. It's sad that the iPhone doesn't have that yet.

Looks like for $15/yr you can get an app that does it. Apple should look at building that in like other companies. [itunes.apple.com]

Foxcomm builds the phone with Googles (former HTC) design team in charge.
I'm curious to know how well call switching happens from cell to Fi and/or visa versa.
The $800 service credit to move to PFi (with 2 phone purchase) is a pretty good deal, especially since it appears to be T-Mo network that we already like.
Very tempting.
