'The time for evacuating along the coast has come and gone. First responders will not be able to come out in the middle of the storm,' Florida Governor Rick Scott said in a tweet on Wednesday morning.

'If you chose to stay in an evacuation zone, you must SEEK REFUGE IMMEDIATELY,' Scott wrote.

In Bay County, encompassing Panama City Beach where Michael is expected to make landfall as a Category 4 on Wednesday, roads are now closed and a mandatory shelter-in-place order has been issued.
Fire and emergency medical services were suspended in Bay County just before 8am local time on Wednesday.

Radio report from ABC News claims "hundreds" of residents have ignored the warnings. Here's hoping they don't regret it.

They're reporting landfall was in a sparsely populated area. At least a silver lining for many.

for the masses, yes, but for the few that live there, it must be hell. And no BIG support nearby...

Due to the high rate of advancing speed and the extremely slow deterioration of wind speeds a lot of wind damage may occur quite a distance inland. Power might be out in a rather large area for longer than was expected when a Cat 3 storm was predicted.

"Based on its internal barometric pressure, Michael was the third most powerful hurricane to hit the U.S. mainland, behind the unnamed Labor Day storm of 1935 and Camille in 1969. Based on wind speed, it was the fourth-strongest, behind the Labor Day storm (184 mph, or 296 kph), Camille and Andrew in 1992."

So far we are OK in Columbia. The kids are out of school, but my business is open and people are showing up (what is wrong with them?). Our power is holding so far...
