Apple doesn't want the Watch to become a Pebble or John Lennon's Rolls Royce.
By controlling and possibly vetting any Watch face that may (hopefully) adorn a Watch, Apple can avoid tacky crap and trademark/copyright (one of those may not apply) violations.
I really want Apple to introduce some new, better Watch faces, and certainly some more elegant than what's currently available. And some rectangular faces.
