A Russian Soyuz rocket suffered an engine failure after lift off forcing a ballistic reentry for the two crew members on board. Reports are that they survived reentry despite the high-G. The crew included an American astronaut.

Not much to see really. All went well until they were in space.

Certainly will be a relief when SpaceX or ULA get their launch vehicles man-rated.

I thought that it was interesting that all the telemetrics that they were displaying on screen showed that everything was going just fine....but the ground control staff were in emergency mode. In one video you can hear the astronauts discussing the High-G reentry they were experiencing...and the whole time the graphics were showing the rocket was doing just fine. Makes me think that the metrics are scripted graphics.

Soyuz is the most proven launch vehicle in history, with more than 1700 launches in 50 years. That is more than three times the most used US launch vehicle in history - the Atlas with just over 500 launches. (In fact all US launches combined since 1957 is only 2,200)

However the failure rate has increased greatly in recent years. That has raised questions about Russia's ability to maintain quality control compared to the Soviet Union.

I wouldn't expect a representational animation to have the sophistication/capacity to show a mission failure in real time.

That truly says a lot. Worse that Soviet Era?!?!

Yeah, I don't know what to think about that. Are the current crop of leaders in Russia trending towards greed than quality...or do they not have enough money from space income to maintain quality?

Quality control in the Soviet Union was excellent for anything of high priority with the state.

I'm glad we never had to fly against Russian pilots flying the MIG-29.

I only just saw this news on the MIT website. I wondered that I hadn't seen this incident on the news. Did I just miss it?

BTW, I ended up subscribing to the MIT Newsletter. I don't know how I got on their mailing list in the first place, but I'm glad I did. They had some fascinating articles.

Check it out. As I said, some fascinating reads, right?
