Priority has long been much cheaper than UPS for small packages, too cheap to be sustainable apparently.

Probably not the case because the carrier stops here anyway. But likely the USPS is raising rates on the mail most likely to bear the increase with the least loss of business.

The fascinating thing is how it's impossible to purchase First Class Mail labels from USPS itself. The only options they give any more are Priority Mail, which makes sending small 12 oz or less boxes/padded envelopes not financially feasible.

One of the last places to do it is via Paypal, and even there, it's not apparent anywhere, at least from what I've seen. You have to know the URL (https://www.paypal.com/shiplabel/create ). Fortunately, it works flawlessly, and I mail out padded envelopes almost every day. I print to my basic printer on Packzon self adhesive shipping labels, 2 to a basic page. Drops the price of what my packs from $7.50 to below $3.

Same for print-based news, I’m afraid.

eBay negotiated sometime ago with USPS to allow First Class packages up to 15.999oz. but the on the top end it's nearly as much as a 15.999oz Priority Package it's just not distance based shipping rates like Priority.
