winter tire changeover quandary

It's getting near that time to change over to the winter wheels and tires – or is it? So the question is, do I...

1. Change them over while it's nice, but not really cold enough regularly to need them yet.

2. Wait until the weather stays cold enough to need them, but b!tch and moan about dealing with it when it's not nearly as nice out as it is right now.

And yes, I'm fully prepared for the "What is this Winter of which you speak? responses, so I'll save you the effort.

Winter tires tend to harden as they age. I read (don't remember where) that you can get maybe 3-5 good years out of them (IIRC). Unless you plan to put many, many miles on the vehicle between now and when snow hits, I'd recommend putting them on before things get bad.

I have the same conversation with myself every year at this time. I'm going with the change then while it's nice outside, since I frequently experience the frozen finger syndrome if I don't.

I am in the same quandary, except my winter tires are likely not much better than my all seasons and I am not sure I want to buy a new set of winters when my vehicle already has 170K on it.

Thanks, folks. I think I'm heading out now to take advantage of a nicer day.

Yeah, do it now, when it's not crowded at all tire stores, with people who waited too long. Reminds me. . . .

The kicker for me is that I always have a long drive to look forward to around thanksgiving day, and I hate to do that on snows if the forecast is good. So I play the waiting game....

All-seasons here. I haven’t switched tires in five decades. But we live in flat country and drive like it’s winter all year.

I just change them when the forecast calls for it. Of course, I change them in the garage. It sounds like you don't have one.

I wait till it gets below freezing. If you don’t put enough miles on to wear the tread down before the tire starts rotting then go alead and change it early. I blow through a set of tires every two years, so for me I keep them off as long as I can.
