Internet Growth is Slowing - and Tech Leaders Don't Know Why

“Tech companies are necessarily invested in getting more people online - which is why it's so alarming to big tech that the pace of internet growth is slowing.

Today, about half the world's population uses the internet. And as world leaders devise strategies to bring the other half online, they've noticed something surprising: internet uptake is slowing. According to a new report from the World Wide Web Foundation, from about 2005 to 2014, internet use was rising by about 12 percent per year. Since 2015, that's slowed to about 6.5 percent annually.

"You expect uptake to increase and then go up quite rapidly, which it's been doing, and then at some point it's going to top off, naturally. Now everybody expects that, but nobody expects that to happen at about the 50 percent mark," Web Foundation CEO Adrian Lovett said.

In an interview with Cheddar's Alex Heath at the Web Summit in Lisbon, Portugal, Lovett explained the challenges inherent to his foundation's aim to establish the internet as a public good and a basic right. Behemoths like Google and Facebook, are also motivated to expand internet use - but likely for different reasons.

Facebook and Google have gone to some pretty serious lengths to connect people in developing countries to the internet. Facebook introduced its limited internet service, Free Basics only to have it fail spectacularly in Myanmar [techcrunch.com] Google's Loon project uses balloons to bring wireless internet to remote areas - but growth is still sluggish.

Lovett offered some theories.”

Perhaps people have better things to do, like fight for survival. The internet isn’t going to help much with that.

It is like TV. There is so much krap available on both TV and internet that folks are staying with what they know/like. They go offline when they finish.

Maybe companies are cracking down on online activity during working hours. They should.

Not kidding. 5G speeds and ubiquity will change the web as well as other personal internet interaction. The number of sensors providing data will explode even more. Big, big, transformation on the way.

“Tech companies are necessarily invested in getting more people online..."

They're just not invested in making it more affordable.
