I got one of these (not the playdoh model, mine is just orange). It works fine, but is restricted to using their spools of PLA, and only PLA. The spools have some chip in the middle that I think tells the machine how much material it has.

I paid $200 several years ago.

what do you use your printer for - I'd love one of these things, but I can't think of a single thing I would do with it.

I've built a few cases for some raspberry pis, a replacement plastic insert for a knob on my range top, a small head for a doll my daughter was making for a school project, replacement part for a bike lock (it had a holder that attached to the bike, but the part that mated to the holder on the cable broke), a car cell phone holder for my wife ...

essentially random things. it was a bit of an impulse buy.

I found modeling/designing the parts to be a large part of the fun.

I bought a cheap 3D printer and printed an expensive 3D printer.

I'd be willing to believe you bought an expensive 3D printer and printed a cheap 3D printer, but not the other way around.... smiling smiley

I have a friend who 3D prints knitting bowls, and sells A LOT of them on Etsy.

What timg said, I paid $125 on eBay shipped from Los Angeles area. All metal construction. Complete build from parts. Anet A2 +, needs some mods for better prints, but pretty much printed after assembly.

Those are the acronyms for the type of material that the printer uses.

PLA is polylactic acid.

WHAT IS PETG?

Polyethylene terephthalate (PET) is the most commonly used plastic in the world. Best known as the polymer used in water bottles, it is also found in clothing fibres and food containers. While “raw” PET is rarely used in 3D printing, its variant PETG is a popular 3D printer filament.

I actually learned something here. When I bought my printer, it was only spec'ed to print with PLA. Now they have PETG and "tough" PLA available.

I'll probably get some of those to try out since the normal PLA hasn't been strong enough for some of the prints.

You know... only ONE thing stopped me from ordering it.
It uses proprietary spools of filament that have a chip in them.

I was going to order THREE. One for me, two to donate to the school I work for.

No proprietary filament spools for me. No way. No how.

There are people on the web working on getting 3rd party filaments working on that printer.

Here's one:

I'll check that out when I have time. Thanks!
It still won't be suitable for the school... Teachers (at least, the ones here) are not tinkerers like me. Hell, I'm barely going to be able to get them to understand what it DOES, much less order supplies.
