55ºF now, was 58ºF earlier
Doesn't get cold here until Sunday night.

I can see colder temps to the west, but it's staying in New York.
We still have one oak tree that still has green leaves.

I prefer no snow until all the leaves are picked up.

just started on my new-to-me old Craftsman blower I picked up this summer. not running. but I disassembled the carb and found the throttle stuck open. also took off electric starter as it was frozen and freed that up. now, to put it back together and see if I got something. trying to spend $0 on it for now until I know it will blow the snow. also doing it so I can give it to my kids and they can earn some money.

We’ve had snow on the ground since Monday and the forecast is that we won’t be above freezing until Friday, Nov. 16 when it will hit 35°. I started my blower in September and it is (mostly) ready to go although no snows are in the 10 day forecast that will require blowing. It’s 23° right now.

Trying to decide if i want to go another year with the old snowblower that won't quit and get one that was made in this century. Mine is pitifully underpowered. It's a Bolens, only 6 HP with a 24 inch path. The wet heavy snow at the end of the driveway from plows makes mine cry. I take about a 6-9 inch wide cut into the snow bank, then it sort of plops it over a few feet, not throwing it anywhere. That is not much of an exaggeration. I also have to clear my rural route mailbox across the road, or I don't get mail.

The snow blower, term used loosely is at least 25 + years old, and his rusting a bit. My neighbor sold it to me when he upgraded his. Paid $35, had it 15 or so years. He said HE had it for at least 12 before that.

Points against keeping it.

Cost $35 fifteen years ago
Starts, runs does what it can. (I wish my other power tools started so easily)
All I do is put in Sta-bil and park in shed, Go out in fall, pump primer a few times, usually will start 2nd or 3rd pull.
So bonus points for reliability.

My local John Deere dealer has 4 used Ariens and JD blowers from $600 to $1000.
Tempted, but cheap. Last year I used it about 4 times, do I need to spend $1000 on that?

Yes, spend the $1k. It beats having a heart attack from shoveling. (My 1999 Deere blower cost $7,500 used and it’s been worth every penny, just ask my neighbors.)

You're gonna need a back-up snow blower, so they can be out there making the big bucks with the one that is running while you are repairing the one that isn't.

You're gonna need a back-up snow blower, so they can be out there making the big bucks with the one that is running while you are repairing the one that isn't.

Yep. I have a 7.5 HP Craftsman as a backup. I haven’t needed it so it looks brand new but I really should fire it up more than once every three years or so.
