Just when you thought you were safe from 2018 Mac mini reviews...

This review is by Jeff Benjamin, one of the best presenters in the tech world, from 9TO5Mac.

He's a bigger fan of the mini than most, and his CPU recommendation will be overkill for a lot of users.

I really enjoyed the video. He doesn't really have anything bad to say about it, so that may disappoint some viewers. But if you don't hate the mini, this video is worth watching.

I'm really itchin' for one.

I guess video can't be embedded, so here're links:

About its upgradeable memory...

It's mentioned that Apple will upgrade the memory after purchase (for anybody who's not willing to it themselves).

What it didn't mention is that Apple will probably not let you bring your own RAM. So it will very likely cost more than the CTO since they didn't get to keep your 8G while charging you the upgrade fee.

I wonder if our sponsors will have a turnkey program for RAM installation.

If you have to pay someone to install RAM plus shipping, you are not likely to save anything over paying Apple’s BTO price.

I was wondering the same thing.

Still no BYOR, but it would be a better price than Apple (Apple/OWC):

16G $200/$170
32G $600/$330
64G $1400/$1080

Plus, Apple keeps the 8G when you CTO.

I don't know what the net turnkey fee would be. And it would be nice to be able to yell at somebody else, should – in the extremely unlikely case - something go wrong.

Definitely a consideration if only going to 16G, and maybe at 24G, but it starts looking better at 32G. But will see, if/when our sponsor overlords offer the service.

For those not practiced in the art of this level of disassembly and a very slight loss of fine motor skills, third-party upgrading might be the only practical option.

Ive seen the videos, looks pretty simple.

Dig OWC and everything they do, but if your goal is to get the cheapest of everything, several other name brands have the ram cheaper... $50 or so depending on config.

jdc, I always look to your recommendations when considering maximum cost effectiveness.

But that one is pretty vague.

Could you be a little more specific, particularly in reference to the $50 bit?

This DIY upgrade definitely isn't for most people, including most on this forum, guest or otherwise. And finding somebody knowledgable, trustworthy, and capable enough to install the memory of your choice might not be that easy.

There's no question that I'd send it to OWC and never consider letting say— the Geek Squad anywhere near it.

I just YouTubed a couple of videos depicting the RAM replacement process — it doesn’t look at all difficult.

It is what it is.

but way more complicated than in 2012 mini. I am not sure why Apple had to change the layout/design so much. The 2012 (and 2010, possibly other models) were a breeze to upgrade. You didn't even need tools.

To fit everything into the same size box.

The 2012 mini wasn't at all complicated.

One could comfortably swap out RAM in <3min. I'm sure a little practice could cut that to close to half the time. That's picking the unconnected mini up from the bench/table, and not starting the clock at shutdown

That big fan/tunnel assembly keeps the memory from being conveniently accessed. And Apple has no incentive to make access to it a priority, only a possibility.

I just bought one (i7, 512 GB) and decided to let Apple install 16 GB RAM. In the past, I added drive doubler and SSD to 2012 mini (and then increased the size of that SSD later), but decided that this time I don't feel like tinkering. If I decide that 16 is not enough (I doubt I will), I will reconsider in a year or so.
