Are 17" laptops oddballs now?

Dragging around my old 2011 MBP 17" has been attracting a lot of comments lately about how bulky it is.

Has the 17" model always been bulky or has perception shifted recently? I don't seem to recall so many comments until the last year or so.

It's a matter of perspective.

To me, the 17" always looked massive.

A 15" laptop is, IMHO, the biggest size that makes sense now unless you are a gamer and you want to play games between classes at your local community college.

If you do a lot of travel, you can always hook up your laptop to an external monitor if you need to , as easily as you can at home. If you're doing presentations, even the MacBook is big enough.

Yes, it’s from an older era. I loved my Lapzilla. Went to a 6’5” scientist where the size made sense.

I’ll never get another. Too much travel and I just use an iPad as an external monitor when I need the extra screen when out of the office.

As I get older and my vision changes, I find 15" to be a bit cramped.
I miss my 17" laptop from 2004.

I have one for work and I pretty much hate it. Doesn't help that it's a heavy-as-hell Dell POS.

Any standard laptop is too big to fit in a "regular" pocket (yes, I know there are "special" clothing items like ScotteVests but, MOST people won't pay for or wear these unusual clothing items). That said, once any case is needed, I want the BIGGEST screen I can get. That's why I bought my 17"MBP and, will keep it running as long as I can. When it finally "gives up the ghost", I'll buy a LARGE screen (17"+) laptop and, either switch over to Windows OS or, put a Linux flavor on it. (my 17"MBP gives me USB3 and eSATA via the ExpressCard34 port both of which I use).

My 2011 works well for my eyes, especially when on my treadmill. I’m happy hauling it around in my laptop bag.

My mom prefers the 12" screen and 2lb weight of her MacBook to anything larger and heavier. But she's not doing content creation or anything like that.

Big and heavy is out nowadays.

I know I shouldn't have any hope, but I am still waiting for Apple to make a new 17" MacBook Pro.

Until then, I am still using my MacBook Pro (17-inch, Mid 2010). RAM maxed out and SSDs installed.
