Can I replace a 9mm drive with a 7mm, without issue?

Hi,

Just got a "failing" alert from my Crucial SSD and need to get something in quickly. It's a 1TB model so I want to order a regular 2.5" drive to back up onto and use until the RMA can be done and the new one gets here.

I replaced the optical with my old internal Toshiba drive, a 9mm (I think), and it has worked like a rock for years. So, I want to go with another Toshiba for the emergency/temporary drive and the upgraded version of my original is 7mm.

Will I need some kind of adjustment or sled, etc., to fit it in?

Thanks.

I've seen some 7mm drives include an optional spacer to grow them to 9mm, but I've never had any issue using them as-is at 7mm in Apple laptops.

Jony Ive may come when you sleep and shave 2 mm off your laptop. That would make him very happy.

There are self-adhesive pads that go on the four corners of the SSD to help hold it in place. Probably can buy on amazon of newegg.

A Mac? Which one? It is very likely that you don't need a spacer.

I've seen some 7mm drives include an optional spacer to grow them to 9mm, but I've never had any issue using them as-is at 7mm in Apple laptops.

I haven't see this but the last few enclosures I bought had an adhesive pad that took up the slack.

No worries, regardless.

If this is for a laptop where moving it might make some noise, Velco or good double-sided tape would work, in the event your new drive doesn't offer something.

If it's for a desktop, again, Velcro or good double-sided tape. Or it might not need securing at all, depending on a specific location.
