So with the 2015+ MacBooks, you cannot upgrade the ram, which is a real negative IMO. Can we find any MacBooks that are upgradeable? Is there a major performance hit vs a 2018 model? It just seems that cpu’s Haven’t improved a whole lot in these last 3 hrs. Thanks.

I should add that it’ll be used primarily for web, word processing, and light A/V...no professional/Hugh end graphics.

Technology moves relatively fast, but not that fast.

Mid 2012 were the last ones with upgradeable RAM (up to 16GB), and standard 2.5" SATA drives that are easily upgradeable to SSDs.

But those models don't have the Retina screens.

Ram isnt all that its cracked up to be, and its not the end all be all.

Although the CPU "numbers" might be near the same, the amount of cores on chips and rates they process things is far far more efficient. And the flash drives. Current macs have flash drives rated at 3000 MB/s -- 5X faster than the 2.5" SSDs you would put in a 2012 MBP. Its near instant, like your phone or iPad. GPUs, although integrated, still triple the speed of a 2012.

For your use, a new macbook would be ideal, even with 8 GB. or any MBP from the last 3 years.

I know these are only numbers, but worth noting:

Any machine made in the last 6 years with 8GB of ram will serve your needs. Just find one that fits your budget and weight tolerance.

This. If you want to go 5 years find one with 16GB.
