No more ICE Volkswagen after 2026 development and VW & Ford in discussions for Volkswagen Group to use idle Ford facilities for their production.

Reuters via NBC News -
Volkswagen will develop its final generation of vehicles using combustion engine technology in 2026, the company's strategy chief said on Tuesday.
VW made a strategy shift toward battery-driven vehicles in the wake of a damaging diesel-emissions cheating scandal in 2015, which forced the carmaker to pay billions of dollars in fines for hiding excessive pollution.
"In the year 2026 will be the last product start on a combustion engine platform," Michael Jost told the Handelsblatt automotive summit conference at Volkswagen's headquarters in Wolfsburg, Germany.
A spokesman confirmed Jost's remarks meant that VW, Europe and China's best selling passenger car brand, will focus on electric cars instead.

Cleantechnica -
Executives from Volkswagen, BMW, and Mercedes had a meeting at the White House recently during which they were “encouraged” to build more of their vehicles in the US or face increased tariffs on the cars they import. Following the meeting, VW CEO Herbert Diess told reporters, “The president has a point in trying to convince us to invest more into America, and we are prepared to invest more. We might use Ford capacity here in the U.S. to build cars for us.”

Believe it when I see it.

It remains much cheaper to "hybridize" an ICE powertrain.

E.g. on the new RAV4, adding the hybrid option costs as little as $800.

A lot can happen in the next 7 years to alter that plan.

7 years is just when the last rev starts. "In the year 2026 will be the last product start on a combustion engine platform". It could be anither decade after that when the platform stops selling.

Until affoardable-for-the-masses all-electric car models can get a 400+ mile range and be ready to go again inside 10 minutes, or teleporters come on line, I'm skeptical.

Think about how far we've come in the past 15 years, and 400 miles and ready to go in 10 minutes sounds doable.

Yes it does!

In local news, my nearby VW dealer is selling TDIs again. They modified those recalled TDIs to meet pollution laws.

Yep, new, never sold 2015 Beetles, Golfs, Jettas, Passats, and 2015 Audi A3 TDI. Reportedly sold at substantial discount & 'special' financing.

USNEWS 5/12/17 -
Soon you’ll have the opportunity to buy a new diesel Volkswagen again, and it will probably be your last chance for a long time. VW is preparing to make TDI models from the 2015 model year available for sale at dealers. The models have been modified to the rigorous standards agreed to by the California Air Resources Board (CARB) and the EPA.

Available Models
The vehicles are a mix of 2015 Golfs, Jettas, Beetles, and Passats that were on dealer lots when Volkswagen issued its stop-sale order soon after the company’s diesel emissions scandal surfaced. In addition, new 2015 Audi A3 TDI models will also go back on sale following the modification.

Each of the “Generation 3” batch of cars will require a software update that reprograms the cars’ engine control modules before they are eligible to be sold, so they will not all be available at once. Over time, approximately 11,000 new 2015 VW and Audi TDI vehicles will be released into the market.

Diesel does not best electrics. And I’m a Diesel car driver for over 40 years (plus Class 8 trucks as a career).

I just received an email with my latest monthly stats on my 2013 Volt:

Fuel Economy:
240 mpg

Electric Consumption:
-- kW-hr/100 miles

Electric Miles:
483

Gas Miles:
25 ——- [Most of these are because the engine runs due to low ambient temperature: 15°F or lower.]

Total Miles:
509 mi

Percentage on Electric:
95 %

Estimated Gallons of Fuel Saved:
20 gal

Estimated CO2 Avoided:
388 lbs

Data is based on total miles driven since last email report.
