Is 5G the next ‘bag of hurt’? Seems expensive for sure.

$200-300 cost over LTE phones.

Carriers have not announced data plans and messaging a major price jump.

And phones will likely be tied back to individual networks.

I’m keeping my mere mortal LTE phone for awhile...

I still think that "big bag of hurt" was a misdirection; iTunes was just starting to dabble into a movie store (if I remember the timeline right; also tied into the timeline of the "hobby project" AppleTV, IIRC) and Apple wanted you to buy/rent movies from them, not have another available disc option.

same as it ever was

The 5G standard hasn't been ratified yet. Any pre-ratified version of 5G will probably be based on the proposed standard but may include some proprietary technology.

Also, like any new technology, the first wave of 5G products will be premium priced. Combined with the info in the paragraph above, smart money says let other pioneers ride the cutting edge and take the resulting slings and arrows on this one.

It is what it is.

I think it's waaaaay too soon to consider the purchase of a '5G' phone, and find it amusing that any manufacturer would be trying to sell one any time soon.

This is another technological 'breakthrough' where Apple will be the last or nearly the last train leaving the station, and I'm on board with that.

I can't wait to see the coverage map when the first 5G phones are announced.

I'm not holding my breath.

"The 5G standard hasn't been ratified yet"

Lets see:

Cassettes vs 8-Track

VHS vs BetaMax

BluRay vs HD DVD

and now,

5G vs god only knows what.

I don't expect to see viable, widely available 5G cell service for 3 or more years.

It's not a versus situation, unless you are counting slightly different standards the modem manufacturers are backing.

I am in a preliminary 'take my money' stance to give a hefty chunk of money to the first wireless company that knocks Comcast's feet out from under them with what I consider an acceptable data cap.
