I would have never guessed that this band was white...

I mean, this was definitely an eye-opener. Plus this mystery song probably couldn't get made today.

Preconceived yes, vision63 racist, in any sense of the word, never!
We all have preconceived notions about what people of certain races or regions sound like. That’s not racist, to me anyway, that’s just personal experience and conditioning. If you make a disparaging comment about someone because of the way they sound, assuming they are of a certain race, then it becomes a racist comment.

V63 was just surprised it was a bunch of white guys that didn’t sound like what he was conditioned to think white guys sounded like.

I respectfully disagree with your argument. If you assume a song is performed by a certain type of person based on its sound, that is racist. I don't see how it's any different than assuming someone committing a crime is of a certain race.

I think the real issue is when you reverse that and assume a person of a certain race has certain traits (whether bad or good). That's where the trouble starts.

And just for the record, I fully believe vision63 is not a racist.

Back from the days of "blue-eyed soul" in the 1960s. Few were as convincing as these guys, however.

if that guitar sound and the drummers licks don't sound "pop" for the time as compared to R&B for the time, I dunno what does.
Throw in the high school horn part and they could easily be the Carpenters with horns.
They certainly didn't make me think JB back in the day.

K, now I'm a racist?

Let's be honest, I think we can all agree that "I Can Dream About You" was a much cooler song when we thought it was sung by the guys in the video.

It's time that people become reacquainted with the definition of the word.

"a person who shows or feels discrimination or prejudice against people of other races, or who believes that a particular race is superior to another: the comments have led to her being called a racist."

I understand perfectly, Vision.

When I was a kid, I always thought this group [www.youtube.com] was a white band. I never would have guessed it was predominantly black musicians.

We had their albums. I can understand. Love that group and that song. Definitely in the cowbell hall of fame.

I grew up near Philadelphia listening to AM radio in the middle 60s. It was always clear to my ears that the O'Kaysions lead singer was white and the Chambers Brothers lead singer was black.

And Fritz has it right, the song sounds classically "pop" per 1968 standards.

YMMV

OK, I covered my eyes as I clicked each link.

Lead singers in order:

White
White
Black
White

I knew the first two already. I was not familiar with Tower of Power because by the middle seventies I listened to only 33s shared amongst my college peers, and none had any Tower of Power albums, but the lead singer in that link sounds like a black artist to me.

The song in the fourth link was clearly not sung by the artists I heard in the 60s (Sam and Dave), and it was easy for me to discern that the singer was white. I didn't realize it was Eric Burdon however, as he seemed to affect a southern lilt not present in Sky Pilot, Don't Let Me Be Misunderstood, or even House of the Rising Sun.

Mitch Ryder was the only one until the verse hits.
But I know those songs too well.
Dunno that I have educated ears, but I have listened all day, every day, even at work if the director is cool with it. Just ask my spouse.
"Can we have quiet for 10 mins?"

Or the last director who asked me to "turn that 5h1t off!"
Apparently it was distracting from the cooking segment rehearsal.
Not that I blame anyone for taking their "work" seriously. They help to keep smirkers like me gainfully employed and prevent me from snarfing (or snorking) granola.

I guessed Eminem was white, but it was a hard call.

Does that make me racist?

Apparently not, at least by definition.

The YouTube comments bear the same sentiment as Viz. My favorite though is:

People Used To Think Rick Astley Was Black

C'mon, everyone knows Rick Astley was black, but converted to white. True story.

In order to complete his transition he traveled to a country that's over 90% white, sang a song about the color white made famous by a white guy, on stage with white performers, in front of a white audience.

At the end of the show he was accepted as "white-ish" according to an online poll.

True, but her father was/is African American. She was all over the video screen.

The true shocker for me and my friends was when Teena Marie first performed on Soul Train.

Love the O'Kaysions - pretty much a one hit wonder band in terms of the charts but they were part of the Carolina Beach Music scene of the 1960s, along with The Temptations, Chairmen of the Board, Band of Oz, The Catalinas, many others.

I grew up listening to that and dancing to it.
