It's been well over a year since I've commuted into Baltimore, but in general going 95 South into Baltimore is not as bad as North in the mornings.

I would just check Google Maps as you get close for real-time info.

Just did it yesterday. Even with the furlough, and being the day after New Year's, traffic sucked.

I-895 TWO Year Project
Creating more traffic on I-95 & I-695 (Beltway) and forget using the BW Parkway, it's a clusterflock.

What's your destination?

South of D.C. you might want to take Rt. 5 to Rt. 301 down toward Doswell, VA and pick up I-95 there. The section of I-95 around Fredericksburg, VA is regularly a nightmare.

I think in the past we've taken 96/895/95 thru Baltimore/Ft Henry?

Another route is take I-695 EAST, go over the Key Bridge (small toll), go to I-97S follow that to the split @ Rt. 301. Take 301 south to Richmond and pick-up I-95 South again.

The scenic route is to detour @ Delaware, down the Eastern Shore on US-13 and across the Chesapeake Bay BT to Va Beach/Norfolk but the CBBT toll is $14 off peak one-way. Complete tolls here (PDF).

Seriously, 895/95 Tunnels suck now because of the construction!

we took the key bridge last time. guess we'll do that again with construction.
301S is good from there I assume?
Not looking for scenic, just fastest least aggro.

yeah, 301S is a little slower but so much less aggro. Before I retired, I use to make biz trips to Pentagon, Quantico, etc. 301 was my go to and that was before the construction delays!

Safe Travels!

Go west of DC (west of I-95) to come down to NC.

That's what my kid does to get home from their school in MD.

Go west young man! My parents lived up in north jersey by the NY border (Mahwah). When we didn't want to deal with the closterflock that is 95 we bounced west into PA on 78 to Harrisburg and then took 15 down to northern VA. For you I'd say take 78 to Harrisburg and then down 81 before you cut back east in VA to get to Raleigh (or 15 down to 29 which will get you to Greensboro). Should only add about 30 minutes to travel time if 95 was clear the whole way (ha! ha!) but is a much less stressful drive. Truckers usually drive those roads so you'll be good hauling a trailer.

An hour of traffic on 495 east of DC for jacknife rubber necking. Onward we go.
key bridge was fast.
Wanted to take 301 but was unsure with trailer.

fyi for future travels, US 301 in pre-Interstate days was the N-S route of choice for truckers. I've been told many still prefer it.
Also a correction, the section that begins @ the I-97 split is labelled Md. Rt. 3 until you get south of US 50. And it can get busy during rush hours, but nowhere near the mess that is I-95 smiley-excited001
