I need a new UPS for my networking gear - Suggestions Please

I had been using an APC model, the Back UPS ES 650.

The battery finally died around 2 or 3 AM today...It woke me up.

Since there's no way to silence this beast without Power Chute software that only works with Windows, I'm not going to replace the battery.

I think this model was overkill for sure for my needs. I need to power a cable modem, router, Ooma box, telephone etc. I guess I only need about 15-20 minutes of life, because during a power outage, that's how long it takes to lose my Comcast service. They don't have much in the way of battery backup for their gear...

Does anyone know of any small decent models, preferably on sale that would fit the bill? A button to silence the beast is a must.

TIA

Why not put the cable modem on ups as well?

Edit: Is your APC connected to your Mac via the ethernet to USB cable? OSX has build in UPS management via the Energy Saver preferences. Not sure whether or not you can silence the alarm though as I don't have my Mac connected to a UPS so I can't check what options are available.

These were on sale recently, $40:

My first APC in a while, I noted that it is "by Schneider Electric" if that means anything. Alarm can be turned off if needed. Most delighted to find that Apple's Energy Saver control panel recognized the UPC when I plugged it into my iMac with included USB cable.

This tie-in to the operating system was a welcome surprise.

Schneider Electric bought APC in 2007. They have branded their UPS's as APC "by Schneider Electric" since 2011.

Another division of Schneider you may be familiar with is Square D.

I used to open up my UPSes and pop the piezo buzzer off the board with needle-nose pliers to stop the beeping.

I think this model was overkill for sure for my needs.

Is their some guide as to how long a UPS will power X number of devices bases on approximate wattage?

A mention of two models with no clue as how to approximate run time for specific use cases?

No watt/hour rating?

As aside- powering your network gear to stay on the air until 'Comcast' dies doesn't seem to make much sense to me. That's me.

Back to my original train of thought... I want to power my modem and router for 30-60min. This would keep my MP and iDevices viable for surfing. Another UPS to be named later would be used to power one computer and a display, if needed.

How do I go about estimating run time vs load?

thumbs up

I did that to my old Verizon FiOS power supply since the mute alarm button did nothing.

Each device should specify the maximum watts per hour that it needs.

My Motorola SB 6141 needs 9 watts (nominal) per hour.

My Airport Extreme uses 10.5 watts per hour when in use.

(pdf link)

My Ooma box maybe 2 or 3 watts.

My phone uses less than 1 watt per hour when idle.

Just add it all up, and even the smallest UPS is overkill.

For whatever reason, I tuned out at 450VA as conversion to Watts is very approximate, depending on who you talk to.

So, in for one.

I pick it up in an hour.

Thanks, free.
