This is a real picture, not an illustration. Made out of stainless steel.

Should the skin be wrinkled like that? It looks like aluminum foil.

Can opener?

(I'm pretty sure this one is unmanned.)

I hate to burst your bubble... but that IS a digitally created rendering of the real "Test Hopper" version that's being constructed.

The "Starhopper" IS being assembled in Texas, and may fly short "test hops" as soon as March (though, smart money says more like July).

Here is a real picture of it, after the top and bottom halves were mated yesterday.

I like it! thumbs up

Although, it DOES look like something from a bad 1950's sci-fi movie.

Oh, and yes... this one is unmanned for engine tests, and flight software development.

The first "real" Starship"/BFR is probably a year away from starting construction.
The final version "Starship" may be able to make orbit with minimal or no payload without the "Super Heavy" booster. That's going to depend on how light they can make the big stainless steel skin and internal structures.
The "Super Heavy" booster will also be a 9 meter diameter core, like the Starship, and most likely be ready for test flight in 2-3 years. This is as opposed to Elon's hops of a year to 18 months.

SpaceX is really throwing a huge investment and lots of resources at the "Starship/Super Heavy" combination, so it seems likely that given the rapid development of the "hopper", the flight articles are going to appear quite a bit faster than the long-delayed Falcon Heavy took (with its on-again-off-again budget).

I'm looking forward to seeing the giant Starship and Super Heavy booster, with their 300 series stainless steel skins launch!

From what I've read, it's both... in spades!
Several times I've read posts by former SpaceX employees that almost all said "I couldn't take working there any more, but I would trade a single minute of my time there for anything". It's got a reputation as both a GREAT place to work, and a VERY HARD place to work.
And it's not all Elon - Gwynne Shotwell is a real shining star as COO. She deserves at LEAST half the credit for SpaceX's success.

And now they're getting rid of 10% of their workers.

I'm sorry to say that is not at all uncommon in the aerospace industry. Boom-and-bust is the order of the day in that business.
