Anyone watching?

Most importantly, must I start from the beginning?

I have a crush on Douglas Henshall and of course have watched every episode. The seasons each tell one story so you do need to watch them all to follow. Yeah I would start from the beginning.

We watched the entire series. Yes, you must start from the beginning. It would be pointless to start anywhere else.

Having finished Shetland and Happy Valley (even better than Shetland IMHO), we're now watching Broadchurch, which ranks up there with both. I can't get enough of these brit crime mystery miniseries. The acting, writing, directing and character development is brilliant in all of them. It's so sad that Hollywood productions can't hold a candle to these shows.

They really do it. It doesn't happen as often as it should, because scientists are human and change is sometimes painful. But it happens every day. I cannot recall the last time something like that happened in politics or religion." (1987) -- Carl Sagan

The only problem we have with the series is that you have to pay real close attention to the dialog because of the accents (somewhat hard to understand; at least for us).

Wife & I love this show; I follow it on Twitter (they're currently filming series 5 in Shetland, or they've recently wrapped it). Yes, most definitely, and yes, start from S1E1. It's an arc'ing story, not episodic (like, say, Midsomer Murders, where you can kind of jump around).

Also very much looking forward to Series 4 of Vera, which is premiering on BritBox this Sunday (1/13)

Brit crime/mystery is my go-to alternative to the drivel that is American TV.
Vera, George Gently, Inspector Lynley, Foyle's War, Life On Mars, Ashes To Ashes, Maigret, Silent Witness, Waking the Dead, et al.
There's so many to get hooked on!

Then there's the comedies...

Yes to all of the above on British crime dramas. Always the best.

And this time of year I also need a dose of British gardening shows and the wonderful Monty Don. Big Dreams, Small Spaces is great, on Netflix.
BBC Gardeners' World is on Amazon Video and BritBox.

I've got all four series and have enjoyed them thoroughly.

And I've re-watched each one at least once.

You don't need to start from the very first episode to appreciate and enjoy Shetland. But to pass on any means missing a lot of quality programming.

I have no problem with the accents. However being very familiar with them would help me when the audio is off. Guessing at the rest of the word or phrase would be a possibility.

I'd say over all, the US has significantly better recording staff or maybe we use ADR more than the UK. Listening to their stuff, I hear more dialing glitches and trailing off of words. Using good headphones and boosting the volume almost never helps.

CC helps but often is not accurate and sometimes just can't keep up.

Anyway, great series and well worth watching.

Also give Manhunt, with Martin Clunes (Doc Martin), a look. Very good as well. Unforgotten will be coming back. Very good, too.

No Offence is great and not typical fare even for Brits, I imagine. Line of Duty, excellent. Bletchley Circle, Endeavor (one of my favorites), Broadchurch, and more.

The Brits do a lot of period stuff too, and I like that.

I find it amusing that folks have difficulty with the accents. You guys need to realize that the accents on these shows are incredibly diluted from the way those folks really talk. Happy Valley is probably the one with the most difficult to understand accents but I have no difficulty since my mum was from Yorkshire. When I go to the village where she grew up it's almost impossible to understand the banter in the pub. They might as well be speaking Chinese.

kind of agree with davester re the 'diluted' accents.
Take Vera for example. It's based on the Northumberland region of England which borders Scotland. So, you have mostly London based actors (& a few Scots) trying to affect the region's dialects (Pitmatic & Northumbrian) which is more Scottish than British. Throw in the heavy Irish influence just south in Tyneside and it's quite an acting challenge to pull off. It's about realism with the original target audience; the UK, not America.

Would Morty Seinfeld be credible with a southern accent?

Fwiw, I began watching the first episode in this current season on pbs, and I didn't feel all that out of touch, but I missed a couple, so now I think I'll just start at the beginning of the first season.
