My MacBook Pro got really, really hot

Like I've done many, many times with MacBooks and PowerBooks over the years, when I got home and the battery was low, I plugged my laptop in. I keep it in the bag and let it charge.

I did this with my late 2016 MBP and left it for a day. It was at about 8% when I started charging it. When I went to unplug it, I noticed the bag was really warm. So I grabbed the MBP and pulled it out. It was almost too hot to touch. Every surface was that hot.

Since it was off or asleep, the fans weren't running. So I turned it on and the fans kicked in and cooled it off. The charge was at 84% which is low since it had been charging for a day.

It seems like it shouldn't get that hot. Any known issues like this for this model?

I seen a couple times where a laptop will get confused as to if the lid is open or closed, and so I could see how it might be possible that it woke up and was running while closed, and then even shut itself off because it got too hot. Nothing specific to that model however.

I've seen that too, though it's been a while. It didn't get that hot.

This time, when I pulled it out, I had to start it up. It was off.

After a few overheating "incidents" w/ earlier laptops, I try to always keep the lid up, and have the laptop on some sort of cooling stand while charging. Just don't want to take any chances w/ heat killing any good gear. Hopefully your MBP didn't suffer any permanent brain damage.

Your batteries are cooked. I never charge MBP in the backpack. Good luck.

I've experienced charging heating in a variety of devices, Apple and otherwise. My basic rule is... if it's charging, it needs to cool by convection. I expect your issue was caused by charging it while it was sitting in your bag.

I've never charged my '16 MBP in the bag but I've had the same issue as you. I closed my laptop , put it in my bag and drove home. When i got inside the house and went to take my laptop out it was SUPER hot. I can only assume that it was confused and something was left running even after I logged out. Or it didn't fully log me out when i closed it. So whatever it was doing, overheated it.

If you actually have to start it and not wake from what mode you thought you left it in, another vote for it got confused and was running and shut down due to overheating.

After watching a few dozen Rossman repair videos, I have much lower opinion of Apple QC and Hardware design. All the better people got sucked over to iOS design years ago.

Today I had it on my lap and the case popped. I felt it in my leg. Something is up.

I've charged in bags may hundreds of times without issue.

Never keep a laptop plugged in and charging while in a bag or on a plush surface.
