Just got something on ebay for 1 cent

With free shipping. How on earth can a seller justify this? It's a postcard, starting bid 1 cent. He has a few thousand listed now with all the ones I scrolled through starting at 1 cent. Very few of the ones with bids were over 15 cents. Even if he sold them all for 50 cents, he'd still be in the hole. It was weird getting an invoice for a penny. How much did PayPal credit him? How much did ebay take? If he had a BIN of $3 with a few bucks shipping, I would have still bought it.

It was just a vintage postcard of our area.

In those cases (although I've never bought anything for less than a few bucks), I have offered to pay a fair shipping price.

Didn't think of that. Good idea, he hasn't shipped so I'll contact him. The last time I was the only bidder on a low starting bid was a computer part that was worth way more than the 99 cent bid. I offered to cancel the auction, he accepted.

I guess, so he is spreading the love for free, well, for a penny.

I've spread my love for less.

Probably bought the lot of postcards for fractions of a penny apiece. One or two or three postcards out of the lot that prompt any kind of competitive bidding could make the initial purchase profitable...

Maybe the seller’s spouse is selling off the massive hoard of postcards while the seller is out of town.

Well, he might mail it to you by putting a stamp on it and dropping it a box.

Also, a common ebay scam is to sell 1¢ trinkets to build up feedback, then start offering stuff for sale. And not ship. Or something like that.

I know with some of the Cell phone loss leaders back in the day - they want your email address to send you monthly value offers that you will bite on in the future?

Does he have a "vintage item store" - found a sucker for a penny....

I dunno, he looks legit. On ebay for about five years, also 8000 in feedback of which 99.8% were pos. He has over 1000 cards up now, the ones I looked at all start at 1 cent with free shipping. Maybe he just has to sell one for $1000 each week to break even. Didn't ask for anything from me other than the invoice for $.01.

Can you see what he's sold? I'd be curious whether the occasional card makes bank for him, or if he makes his money elsewhere...

One of the best ebay scams of all time involved a gigantic operation. They sold all kinds of cheap crap - one that I remember was a cut glass chess set for something like $10. They always had 1000s of sales running. Most everything was sold for $1 or less. AND they sold high end macs too - maybe 5 or 10 a month, but they never delivered the macs. Their feedback was something like 99.8%. You'd see page after page of positive FB, but every now and then you'd see a negative listing in all caps screaming about never getting their $3000 mac, but it would be buried in all of the positive fb.

This was a LONG time ago and this operation could work not now, but certainly small variations might.

Just an fyi - ALWAYS be careful out there and expect the worst.

I imagine that in your case the seller is just getting rid of stuff. Perhaps they are selling these postcards badly and don't realize since they are so big. It's likely all automated. Maybe in a week some will look and see that these are generating a loss and may up the price to 25¢ or maybe for every 3 1¢ sales, there is one that shoots up to $3 and it balances nicely in the end.

Maybe the seller’s spouse is selling off the massive hoard of postcards while the seller is out of town.

He'll probably get an additional pile of them in the mail.

Well, of course, eBay will take their 10% of that penny.

Seems to be the most likely explanation!
