Mac to TV (USB3 to HDMI) — not showing up

Hi,

I'm trying to get the video output of my MBP to play on a TV.

I bought a USB 3.0 to HDMI adapter and cord, and am running that into the TV.

I selected the HDMI port and there's no signal.

Other than the possibility that either the new adapter or cord (or both) are bad, is there a missing piece here......such as you can't get video to play from USB 3 to HDMI, etc?

The retailer didn't have Thunderbolt to HDMI, so I had to go with the USB option.

Any thoughts are appreciated.

No real answer, Im assuming you checked all the systme prefs. I used USB 2 to DVI with no issues.

Fwiw, Tbolt is the same as mini display port... $10 cable.

Regular USB-A to HDMI?

Closest that I usually see would be mini/micro-USB HDMI adapters for cell phones. More likely to find a USB dock that also does video than you are to find a straight USB-A HDMI adapter if you went to a legit electronics store. Where'd you get it, Walmart discount bin?

Anyway, 90% of the time you need to install a driver for a USB display adapter to work. Try this one:

Running 10.12.6 on an MBP mid-2012, the adapter is plugged into one of the two USB ports, and the HDMI cord plugs into that.

I think he was asking about the brand and model of the adapter.

Tried the driver that I linked to?

Still need to know what kind of adapter. Something like the NewerTech USB 3.0 to DVI (HDMI) Video Adapter that OWC sells for $30?

Sometimes the TV/projector needs to be on and have the port selected before running the app to configure the dongle. How did you try to configure the second display, extend/mirror and what resolution? Sometimes a TV will not sync unless the signal is exactly what it likes. Did you restart the Mac with the adapter connected and the TV on?

Tried to download the driver from the company's site, but it's for Lion, which is 7-8 years old. Weird, it covers USB 3.0 but the driver is that old. I'll just take it back.

I went back and they were able to find a mini-display port to HDMI cord, which worked perfectly.

I had asked for a Thunderbolt-to-HDMI cord initially (not the term "mini-display port"), and being a 99% PC shop, they didn't really know what I was asking for.

Thanks for the help guys.
