I really like the idea of remote cloud storage via WebDAV

Not all my files will fit on my new Macbook Air.

Neither will a lot of people's.

I want to move seldom-used files into remote storage.

Dreamhost offers a WebDAV service.

I like that it comes up in the Finder just like another drive.

But I talked with support last night and it's really supposed to be for "website" related files.

They want to sell me another service called DreamObjects which uses Amazon S3 and requires $50 software on each computer, and charges for monthly storage and downloads.

My question: if these are just, say 100GB of files (lots of media like home movies I might look at once every three years, for example) that take up a lot of space, how are they going to know whether or not they are website-related?

What other providers might I consider who have affordable cloud storage (NOT sync to a local folder) that is accessible via a normal Finder window? Thanks.

You could use iCloud through the Files app. Microsoft’s OneDrive can be included in Files app, as well as Dropbox,
But I’d use iCloud... and keep a local copy... maybe sync iCloud Drive to it once in a while.

I doubt very much that they'll pay that much attention to your files on their servers, unless they are generating a ton of bandwidth or utilizing other server resources in a way that violates their terms of service. Long-term storage of files that aren't utilized on your website isn't really going to put up any red flags in their eyes.

All the same, I wouldn't trust your only copy to that type of storage.

Any reason not to use a paid dropbox / one drive account to do the same thing? Just set your sync preferences to not sync any folders in your "archive" folder? I'd go that route before trying to rig up something with Web DAV.

Clay, I was reading about that selective sync feature at lunch. It does sound like it is an option for me.

Previously, it was useless because if it’s just going to keep a copy on the local drive that it doesn’t save me any space.

(sorry those screen grabs are so gigantic.)

Years ago, I backed up all my archived work files to my website. Got a notice from them saying that, even though they offer unlimited storage, it's only for website related files. I wondered how they knew that's what I was doing and figured they had a bot or something monitoring folder sizes. I then broke my archived files into smaller folders and never heard from them again.

I'm now using pCloud. It mounts on the desktop as a drive for data access.
Your media can be streamed over the web, or to an iOS or Android app.
You can choose a folder to sync to a folder on pCloud if you wish, or not. I don't sync.

A lifetime 500GB subscription is currently $175, but they sometimes have sales.
Monthly currently is $3.99, annually currently is $47.88.

If you want to try it out, you can get for free "up to 10GB" (presumably 5GB with up to an extra 5GB if you refer enough people - I'm not sure).

They've been around since 2013; presumably they'll be around for a while.

I've been happy with the service; I just a few days ago upgraded from the free plan.

Blank DVDs are cheap and you only have to pay for them once.
