I bought some stuff. They took a bit longer to ship than I'd like, but whatever. It arrived. A couple weeks later, it arrived again. Checked my card and it was charged only once. I contacted the seller and didn't hear back very fast. Eventually they said they would send a shipping label. I've waited a few more weeks and now I finally have it.

I'll send it back. It's a couple hundred bucks worth of stuff, but it doesn't matter.

What would you do?

Newegg did that twice with me, but it wasn't an expensive order either time.

I always offer to send it back if they provide the shipping label.

I would call them twice, and each time I called them I would tell them what happened, twice.

And then i would tell them, twice, that I am not returning the 4 packages they sent me, twice, on different occasions!

depends upon the value. if it was a couple of hundred worth of stuff, hell even one hundred, i'd contact the seller and see if they want it back (at their own expense).

it's only happened to me twice. one was a jambox speaker from Woot/Amazon. the other was a long sleeve T shirt donor bonus from a public radio station. didn't bother to try to return either of those once i checked to make sure i wasn't double billed. judgement call.

It was a $6 flashlight.

I bought it (can't remember where) and tracking said it was delivered... but to another city. I called and said I never received it and they agreed to send another. After I received it, my county's Sheriff Department called and said they found a package in their lobby with my name on it. The woman I talked to said maybe the UPS person had dropped it, someone found it and left it in their lobby - it's a mystery how it ended up there.

It was my plan to return it but I never got around to it.

I'd pay for both of them then send them both back with a stern chastisement.

Exactly. Hasn't happened often, but has happened.

Once was a cordless drill where I'd clicked on the wrong model, and then cancelled the order almost immediately. Came anyway. Neither Amazon nor the third-party seller wanted it back. (It was a cheap model.) Apparently more trouble to re-enter it in their systems than to let it get chalked up to a loss.

Another time was an item mis-delivered to a neighbor (in a really obscure location at a side door) which didn't get found for a couple of weeks. Can't now even remember what it was.

Good luck.

The law says that you can keep anything that you didn't order.

You can try to send it back but how often is the law helping you prosper?

I ordered a $20 item and got two packages - both with the same tracking number.

I contacted them and explained and they shipped me a third. I didn't say anything else.

Just what you did.

We bought an item from Williams Sonoma and they sent us a box of 12. I called them and told them and they said they'd a label back. Then they also said they'd have to charge us for the other 11 items until we returned them. That really irritated me. They did send the label and I sent it back. And then waited for the refund. And waited. And waited. I finally called a couple of weeks later and went through their customer non-service until I finally got to somebody who could understand. That person finally did the refund. That experience would make me very cautious to do it again. It was a $15 item and it took me way too long to save their money for them. Maybe what I'd do next time is take them to the store the next time we're in the mall, drop it off and run!

I've done exactly what you did. The one time it happened to me (actually my wife), they just said "keep it".

The other time I was involved was when I was a teenager, and a friend ordered a color "bubble jet" printer. They were pretty expensive back then... we're talking like 35 years ago. They sent him two. So he sold me the second one for half price, so we both made out on it. I probably wouldn't do that now, but I was a poor high school kid, and... well I guess I wasn't so poor because I was able to come up with enough money to pay half price for it.

Yeah, my wife ordered a case of washing machine cleaner from Walmart when they were fairly recently into the online business, and they sent us a case of dishwashing machine cleaner with the same brand name. She called and let them know they screwed up, and they said, keep it- we’ll send you the right stuff.

The box came a while later, and...it was the dishwasher stuff. Again.

They said keep it again, and tried again. The third time they got it right.

We sold the other stuff on eBay, bit by bit. Took about 18 months, but it’s all gone now.

Yeah, I'm aware of that. One time I ordered something from REI. A $20 item. They said they had something like 23 left in stock. I ordered 1 and a box of 23 showed up. I mentioned it to someone and they told me about the law. I contacted REI and they sent me a label to return the other 22.

About a year ago, a client ordered a Mac Mini; she recieved a stack of four, all shrink wrapped together. They all had shipping labels, but hers was on top.

Apple arranged to have the three others picked up.

I would have told them that they do not have my permission to charge me for items I did not order.

And if they did, I would immediately dispute it with my CC issuer.

I think it depends on how current the item is. I've had a few shoes get double shipped, and the current models get sent back, while the clearance models they say,, "go ahead and keep 'em".

Bought a Dyson vacuum online, which arrived slightly damaged. Took pics, vendor sent a replacement that arrived intact. Took forever to get a return label... they really didn't want it back because UPS had already paid the claim. Mrs. Buzz didn't want to deal with our replacing the $40 broken part, so after 8 months and countless calls and emails, it was finally returned.

Your plan of action was spot on.

Did get one double shipped shoes, before Baby Buzz's feet stopped growing, that they wanted us to keep, but since the kid was outgrowing them too fast, we wanted to send them back. That was almost as big a hassle as the Dyson.

Contact the seller and ship it back... IF they pay shipping and arrange pickup.

Otherwise they are SOL.

From vis' link ( [www.consumer.ftc.gov] )

What do you do when you receive merchandise that you didn’t order? According to the Federal Trade Commission...

That seems like an oddly worded statement to be on the FTC's site, almost as though they're speaking in third-person.

When I read that sentence, I had to double check that it was in fact the FTC, and not somebody FTC-adjacent, and not even a .gov.

You mean you ordered one by mistake, and they shipped you two on purpose to pad their sales stats.
