What color drives are in WD external HDD?
Posted by: Surfrider

When I look for a black/caviar WD HDD, I get nothing.

If I type "WD HDD Black" I get a bunch of hard drives with black cases, not the black/caviar drives.

One of them may be the drive I want but I'm skeptical when I change the color of the item marked "black" it changes to white, or orange or whatever, it's obviously talking about the enclosure cover.

Seems like an easy solve but I'm licked...I can't find what I desire....(I know this sentence is seductive, but forget that, tell me what drive to buy!)

Thank you.

You should search for "wd internal black drive".

As for the "color" the drives are inside a USB drive, it's often a "Red" drive (now), used to be "Green", but now WD is just putting in "white" label drives (which most think are still "Red" drives. I don't think WD puts "black" drives in any of their external drives.

I can find internal drives till the cows come home, I need an external hard drive.

I know the colors that WD uses, I just don't know what color drive is in what model of external drives.

Nobody does.

WD was putting red drives in the externals, but that stopped. Now they're white labeled drives, and some people are claiming they're relabeled red drives.

I haven't seen anything reliable that says the white drives are in fact relabeled red drives.

I recently got a 10T easystore from BestBuy that had a white label drive. No clue as to whether or not it was really a red.

The latest groups of 10TB WD Elements/EasyStore drives have all been white label, which are reputed to be red drives, but WD is mum on the topic. Likely true of 8TB drives, too.

The other external drive WD sells is the MyBook, which has on-board encryption. Don't know what is generally inside these, because they are less likely to be shucked.

If you're looking for a Caviar-caliber drive, search for 7200RPM drives with 128MB of cache. Red drives are 5400RPM and large capacity drives have more cache (256MB).

For the record, WD's official policy is NO GUARANTEE ABOUT WHAT DRIVE/CACHE/SPEED is inside any external enclosure they sell.

If you want a guaranteed black drive in an external drive, then you should buy an internal drive and put it in an enclosure (you'll get a longer warranty this way too), albeit it will cost more.

Are you doing this for the perceived notion that somehow one WD drive is better than the other, or will last longer?

Or are you looking for a fast Black drive for media access?

If its for backup, Id say meh, any drive is fine. If you are looking for a fast media drive Id say build yourself a RAID 0...

As total acendotal experience -- in recent memory Ive only had 3 drives die -- all WD, 2 of them blacks.

I think pre-rolled external drives are intended to be storage-only solutions and not particularly performance oriented. Manufacturers offer these as a plug and play consumer product.

For performance, they have internals with clear and fairly detailed specs.

I haven't looked extensively, but I haven't seen a fast, large cache external HD.

If you want a 'black' wd drive in a wd enclosure look for specs that state 7200RPM. I'm not convinced such a thing exists.

btw, WD drives don't fare well in the backblaze data [www.backblaze.com]

Yea, you probably won't find such a thing in a commodity manufacturer drive. You'd have to go to a specialist like G-Tech, OWC, etc, at which point, buying an internal and putting it in an enclosure yourself is a little cheaper.

Many years ago now ( 2011-ish? ), around the time of the Great Hard Drive Disruption Flood, WD put black labeled drives in some of their cheaper externals. Trouble was, they were only guaranteed for 1 year, vs. 5 years if the drive was sold as an internal. I bought a bunch back then, and two failed. One gave me enough time to recover everything needed after a year and half of use, the other failed after only about three weeks of use, just as I was getting it configured as I wanted it, but not quite completely, and that drive wasn't backed up yet, or recoverable. I had waited about 13 months to put that one into service, and WD said tough luck.

Scouting for 7200 RPM drives sounds like your best bet these days if you're looking to discern performance. Good luck.

I feel that it's best to help people by answering the question they are asking if possible. The stated goal was to find a WB external drive with a black label WD drive inside.

Agreed.

Address the specific question first, then volunteering additional information or opinion, if requested or warranted.

My goal was to find an HD that wouldn't screw up after a year.
