I'm not following why it would be that expensive...injection molding of plastics is pretty cheap. You can get a Raspberry Pi case for $5.

The actual injection molding is cheap, making the mold to do so is expensive.

$50k for a mold? For a relatively simple plastic case on a low quantity job? They don't need a $50k mold unless they are making 10,000 of these. They will be lucky to sell 500. I think they are over estimating the demand and going too high of quality.

A mold that will stand up to the necessary injection pressures is not cheap. To also maintain dimensions and tolerances requires careful machining and proper sizing to accommodate changes in size due to the plastic cooling. $50,000 is cheap for a mold in the size needed, and there is not much difference in what is needed for a short production run vs a long one.

However that approach being taken now is SLA, a form of 3-D printing. They are not trying to raise money to produce injection molded parts

Since my SE/30 is long gone, I have no use or interest in this curiosity. To show how Apple's focus has changed--even though it says Mac in the title, I was thinking they were building this for the iphone SE.
