2002 Buick Park Avenue "Service Engine Soon" light came on

It is due for a 3,000 oil change in about 300 miles. It has never come on before when an oil change was due. It ran a little rough for 30 seconds and then the light came on. It went off when it quit running rough. There aren't many auto stores here to check the code, but there is an O'Reilleys. Maybe they can tell me something tomorrow.

Need the code(s). You can buy a cheap Bluetooth reader for the phone for basic codes reading.

I had a 2000 Buick Lesabre. One electric module after the other crapped out. Get the codes, buy the replacement parts yourself and replace them if possible.

It has nothing to do with the oil change. Running rough can be from a variety of reasons. Oreilly's should be able to read the code(s), at which point you'll be able to make a better decision on course of action.

Was it raining or humid when it ran rough and the code came on? My suspicion would be a coil pack if so. There aren't too many things that cause intermittent rough idle.

The codes are going to tell the story though. O'Riely should be able to read them.

It was rainy. Also, I left the hood up last night and it got light rain on the engine. Would the coil pack dry out?

Yep, the coil packs get cracks in the housings or corrosion on the bottoms. When it rains or they get wet or it is really humid moisture gets inside and they don't work right. They dry out and then work fine again...until it rains.

It looks like there are three on your car, each one does 2 cylinders. The misfire codes should tell you which cylinders have the misfire and you can replace just that coil pack. Otherwise, you could do all three. But I would still do them one at a time. I've had way to many coil packs that are bad out of the box to just randomly throw 3 in and assume they would all work.

If a coil.pack is suspected bad, you can swap it with one of the others in the car and see if the problem travels, to confirm.

Everyone with a car more than three years old should own a code reader. My Mazda3 throws a code every few months that suggests the car is going to blow up due to a catastrophic fuel leak. Problem: loose gas cap, followed by a week of the code before it resets itself. Resetting using the code reader takes 30 seconds.

Pretty common for the O2 sensor to crap out on those vintage of GM's, or maybe the catalytic convertor (expensive).

I don't know much about cars, but the coil pack(s) make sense to me:

• Left hood up overnight in light rain
• Happened while driving in light rain
• Only missed about 30 seconds

Forget all the complicated advice. Go straight to the simplest solution.

Click and Clack's rule of thumb: If repairs are costing more per month than payments on a new car, it's time.
