The Viking Sky cruise ship that stalled at sea last week — leading to a daring rescue operation — broke down because it didn’t have enough oil, officials said Wednesday.

Low oil levels directly caused the engine failure that left the ship’s nearly 1,400 passengers and crew members...

The dipstick who failed to have a policy for checking the dipstick should be dipped in oil.

Why do people set foot on cruise ships anymore? I would rather have root canal.

River cruises are very cool. Less than 200 people, total, on board and very modest entertainment--pretty much a singer with a guitar in the bar for a couple of hours in the evening. Cruise overnight to a give stop and spend the day exploring a new area.

We're planning on taking a Viking ocean ship that goes to the various Scandinavian capitals and St. Petersburg. There are 900 people on those ships but I've been told that they don't feel anything like the 2500 people Caribbean ships. We'll see. It does look like I need to bring an extra quart of oil with us!

What a coincidence.

I was just talking to a guy who took a semi/tractor out and didn't pre-trip it.

For whatever reason it didn't have enough oil in the start of his run, and he lunched the motor. The mech said it was going to be an expensive fix.

As I understand it, the heavy seas somehow kept the oil from getting to the right place. I'm guessing by leaving the oil pump somehow high and dry for much of the time.

I checked my dipstick of my new-to-me 2016 Jetta for the first time about 4 months after buying it. The oil line was half way up the dipstick -- way overfilled.

Lesson: Never presume the dealer has filled the fluids appropriately; check before purchasing the vehicle.

Two-year old vessel with modern diesel-electric propulsion system.
I have serious doubts the Captain did not have engine monitoring display(s)
on the bridge, just like you'll find in a modern d-e railroad locomotive.

Seems someone is avoiding the issue of why the ship left port in bad weather.
dunno smiley

I burned out a lawnmower when I failed to check the oil after winter storage. Fortunately, the passengers had already disembarked.

The larger ships now feature an open area down the middle (below the top decks) that is basically an actual mall with store fronts and whatnot.

Yep, I have been around to see a postmortem on a "lunched" diesel, essentially it ended up being a full engine replacement. In that case it was not the driver's fault, but one of the fleet mechanics. He was relatively new and was responsible for evening coverage. As part of that he was assigned to do oil changes and the like when not responding to problems. Turned out he pulled the wrong dispenser one night and filled the engine with ATF instead. That bus made it through most of a day before the engine seized.

i was on a ship last year that had a small Apple store. cruises aren't for everyone and the ones i've been on i've been paid to be there. that being said, don't knock it if it simply isn't your cup of tea. the convenience, the built-in known all for one price of most of the trip, and, frankly, being pampered for a few days on a well run ship can be a welcome respite. before i ever took one i used to knock them. i don't any longer. the two i had my mother along with me (Alaska and the Carribbean) are fond memories that linger. i think i've done about 10 cruises.

Oh yeah, not knocking it at all. I'm going on a cruise from Seattle to Alaska this summer. My first was from Miami to Mexico, which I obviously enjoyed enough to do another. Certainly not for everyone though, I get it too.

My sister's family went on one last month. The ages of the participants were: 72, 66, 39, 37, 20, 16, 6, and 4. They said never again with that lineup.

Wow, what a great marketing idea. The Root Canal Cruise, not to be confused with the Jazz Cruise.
