Browser that supports java?
Posted by: wowzer

I just changed jobs and the new place's VPN requires java to run as a part of the VPN/virtual machine (apparently).

I can't find any browser that supports java. In fact, even on windows, only IE runs java. Does anyone know if there's a mac browser that supports java?

Thanks.

All I ever really needed to know, I learned from watching Star Trek.

I think it was still possible to run Java in at least Safari 5.x. I can not find a support doc on the specific version/date when Apple blocked it from working as a plug-in.

FireFox 51. Download it and then turn off auto updates so it doesn't update itself.

Firefox version 52ESR is the last one that supports the Java plugin. It can be found here - [ftp.mozilla.org]. It may prompt you that there is a later ESR version, but as I recall it shouldn't auto-update to that.

Not for a long long time.

Any idea who makes the firewall/VPN that you're connecting to?

Most of those old Java applets can be replaced with regular VPN apps.

It still has it's uses. There are some odd file editors that rely on having Java installed.

Java, Flash... all ran afoul of malware. Gee... who woulda thunk it ? An interpreted flexible programming language that runs with your client machine's processor and memory ? Totally safe, right ?

Here is the very last version of Firefox 52.9, containing more security updates than the 52.0 version:

[ftp.mozilla.org]

Still runs Java, it's what we use here for Macs.
