Possible long term fix for 2011 15" MBP GPU issue (Rossman talks to dosdude1)

No more putting your MBP motherboard in a toaster oven! Apparently Apple changed the motherboard enough from the 2008 model that it's not possible use a firmware update to lock the 2011 model into using only the integrated GPU. A third party experimenter came up with a way to do it manually, meaning that a 2011 15" MBP with the ubiquitous GPU issue can be resurrected with a 15 minute (how long it takes him to do one) manual flash procedure.

Free directions for how to solder on your MBP motherboard, ~$20 custom firmware, ~$21 firmware flashing tool from ebay.

Good question. It might be worth it if a long favorite machine just suffered the discrete GPU failure and you didn't want to recycle it or sell it for parts just yet.

I still have never experienced this issue on my 2011 15" MBP (knock on wood).

It is what it is.

I have seen the failure on about 85% of these machines that have come across my desk. Maybe 12 of 15 that I've dealt with over the past couple of years.

I have and use the same machine. However my video works well enough that I can just run the menubar app which forces the iGPU use.
