iTunes suddenly plays only one song at a time
Posted by: lost in space

It used to play a whole album but now it only plays one song at a time. I looked on the interwebs and all I can find to do about it is to check all the checkboxes, which works, but I can't see doing that for all the albums we have. Help me, obi-mrf. You're my only hope.

P.S. iTunes 12 on OSX HS

Thanks, Article, but no hint there. In View as Playlist, all the songs are greyed out. Even if I select all the songs, only the first one in the playlist plays.

Do you have an iPhone, iPod, iPad or other MP3 Player plugged in?
It might be trying to play from a device instead of your library.

Is you library on an external drive? Has the drive been ejected or is it missing?

Have you tried restarting iTunes? or your computer?

"In View as Playlist, all the songs are greyed out"

that means that Itunes doesn't know where the songs are

I only use itunes for files ON my computer so if you have some apple music service, I don't know how that might interfere, but I would start by trying to find the files in the finder.

Kurtzie, all the songs are on the computer, no devices attached. Did the restarts, no joy. Thanks.

hal, I can play the songs, but I have to hit the play button for each song. Thanks.

If you add a bunch of songs to a new playlist, does the problem exist with the tracks in the new playlist?

If it is the same problem I had, you select song or songs then right click to get the menu and scroll down to uncheck selection and then get the menu again to check selection. That is what worked for me.

To recheck, in 'Songs' mode, select the top one, scroll to the bottom, shift/click the last one.

Right click > check selection.

A new playlist made with greyed out songs has greyed out songs in it, but they play properly.

I think DewGuy was saying this:

When you view the entire song-library in the panel on the left (click "songs") you should still see the checkboxes...

Use Edit>Select All and then control-click on the first song. Choose the option to check the checkboxes for your selection.

It may take awhile, but every track should get checked.

You could try rebuilding your iTunes library.

Bingo! That fixed it. Funny how I didn't *get* what DewGuy and jims were saying.

Thanks, all!

iTunes is so counter-intuitive these days, I gave up long time ago.
