Tire rental? That can't be good for the renter.

I just heard a radio ad for tire rentals from an EZ Pay store. Too bad some people can't afford tires, so let's charge them twice as much.

my son tells me it's a thing for dudes (sorry, it is a guy thing) who want to have fancy wheels on their cars that they otherwise can't afford.

That is really depressing.

That is really depressing.

Yes.

Instead of spending that on tires and rims that one won't own, they could be spending on pricey cellphones that they'll never own.

Or they swap the wheels for different rims and tires to update their ride.

Think of it as subscription rubber and rims.

Exactly.

I don't know what kind of combinations that store rents, but to buy some are $2000 (per tire) and up depending on size and rims.

So dude can show out without shelling out major ching.

I think that could be a really tempting service for some people. You pay a few hundred a month, and get to have new wheels just as often. Of course you would have to keep them nice so that other subscribers would be able to enjoy them too. I suppose if you like them enough you could keep as well.

Yes; this. You're going to pay for that tire many times over while you have it. I can remember rental places offering expensive gaming console rentals; by the time your term was up, you could've bought six or seven of them.

There's a place that rents tires & wheels out by the college (which itself is in an economically depressed area) that does this; no (or little) money down and what seems like great terms. Someone on a regional message board said there's a fee at turn-in that basically doubles what it would have cost just to buy them. And that's after you've paid for them a few times over during the rental period.

AR outlawed payday lending shops some years back, but these kinds of places still thrive.

So that's where the guy around here who drives a crappy Malibu with insane dubs on it got their wheels. Beyond crazy/stupid.

Yep! It's the same with 'rental centers', 'rent' a TV & over 12 months you'll pay
3x what you could have purchased it for from wally's, Target, etc. Plus you sign
a contract basically giving the center a 'no knock warrant' to recover their TV if
you default.
Another one is the 'Good to Go' cheap minimum car insurance ($20 down, yeah right). Preying on the same 'target' group.

Yep, that's what Mrs. Zealand and I always comment when we see a set of 22s on a POS '80s or 90s American car. Rental, they'll be gone in 6 months.

It's a rental center that has the ad for the tires. Someone said in addition to the fancy rims, some people rent tires because they can't afford the price of even cheap new tires.
