who plays sudoku? it took me 50min to play my 1st game-jeez!

so my most wonderful, ever loving wife has suggested that i start the morning with some puzzles.

there is a SET matching puzzle game on the new york times website that i have been working on every day.

i have played three free games offered by luminosity (a paid website with a freebie attached).

i have enjoyed both.

am i smarter? nah.

more alert? doubtful.

more brain ready? for what!

so i watched a you tube vid about how to play sudoku.

i played the easy section on the washington post website.

it took me over 50min!

i feel like a total idiot.

i think i will go outside and run a 5k.

it is easier to exercise my legs than to exercise my brain.

(and shorter-i can usually run a 5k in under 30minutes!)

thumbs up.

Hahahaha, the first few take time until you get used to the patterns and how to work them out faster.
I do them when I’m bored at appointments or waiting for someone (dad cab service)

Sudoku is a good brain teaser. The more I do the more I improve... the first few took me quite some time, I'm not sure I even finished them. As time has gone on, I've developed various tricks (deductions and inferences) that helped me speed along solutions.

For example, take the top 3 boxes (what I call each 3x3 of squares that forms a larger 3x3 of each for a superset 9x9.) Say the number A can go in either of the two rows in the first two boxes, but all 3 of the rows in the third box, and luckily, in that 3rd box, two of those row squares are already filled. That 3rd box's 3rd row's open square HAS to contain A.

Easier illustrated I think than described...

[ A F E ][ A C D ][ A _ _ ]
[ A D C ][ A E F ][ A _ _ ]
[ _ _ _ ][ _ _ _ ][ A C B ]

Carm has it right about getting used to finding the patterns. I have been playing for years, still spot a different way to solve some layouts faster occasionally.

Mostly I play on my laptop while waiting or in between doing something else. The ones I do on the laptop are from websudoku.com. I have been playing on their "Evil" setting and it says I have done thousands since I started on this laptop in Nov. 2015. I average about 15 minutes each.

I've done them on a website, and I think my fastest time is maybe 11 minutes or so . According to the website statistics this is a pretty terrible time. I have no idea how people solve a problem like this in 2 minutes or less. No idea at all.

This.

I have a Sudoku app and a crossword app on both my iPhone and iPad - they are my go-to time fillers when I need to fill some time.

There are indicatioins that the world is getting smarter. When I started using the websudoku.com site (years ago), the average time for solving an evil puzzle was above twenty minutes. Now the average time to solve is closer to ten minutes.

I'm out of practice now, but I was able to solve the hard ones...I was slow, but I could do it.

Where I lose patience is one where it seems like the only way to solve is by trial and error. That's OK with a handful of numbers left, but not half the puzzle.

I've got the NYT crossword app,

I only do the Daily Mini. It's simple but not particularly easy and gets more difficult through out the week.

But I solve them on my own and get to say 'I do the NYT crossword' and hope I don't have to follow up with 'No, not that crossword!'.

I would submit that the only thing we are able to grok from that is people who tend to spend their time solving puzzles are getting smarter, as opposed to the entire population.

There are tricks to different levels of sudoku puzzles. It's pretty much just matrices/linear algebra and recognizing patterns. I'm not really good at it, my brain won't store enough levels of variables.

There are a lot of iOS Sudoku apps.

I might try one, some time.

But I prefer my brain be lightly chided in a friendly manner than teased.

That would bode well for the life expectancy of 'Phone or iPad.

There are a lot of iOS Sudoku apps.

My preferred app is Sudoku', published by Mind The Frog. It offers multiple difficult levels (Easy/Medium/Difficult/Hard/Evil/Diabolical/Daily Challenge). Highly recommended.
