Anyone have an infestation of centipede-like bugs in the house?
Posted by: Dennis S

The bug guy says "everyone" in town has them. I don't want to spend hundreds of dollars on them. Is there a poison I can spray the perimeter of the house with? There are no pets.

I find sticky traps used for mice and spiders seems to snag a fair amount of these.

No, and you can keep them in your house as far as I am concerned...

Are they actual centipedes or are they just "centipede-like"? If they happen to be House Centipedes, you actually couldn't ask to have a better bug in your home because they are voracious predators of other types of bugs such as roaches, spiders, ants, bedbugs, and silverfish.

They're not house centipedes. They are about 3/4", solid dark gray on top and lighter on the bottom. They have two antennae and are not overly ferocious looking. They are not agressive. They get crunchy when they die. The bug guy wants a minimum of $150 and knowing him, it will be lots more. I got some Demon 40% cypermethrin at the co-op.

Woodlice, perhaps?

There are only two choices up here in BF, Arkansas. The co-op option will probably work for $19.

I wouldn't have thought of silverfish as "centipede-like" since they have only the normal number of legs for an insect, but I guess they do have a somewhat centipede-like appearance.

This is as close of a picture I can find. They're not that shiny and the bottom color doesn't wrap around as much. They're around 3/4" but often smaller.

Millipedes. Many years ago I sprinkled some powdered poison around the foundation, and that worked. I don't remember the name of it or even if it's still legal. I'm sure if you do some googling for a "cure" for millipedes you'll get rid of them. Good luck!

I got some cypermethrin at the co-op. It's a powder you mix with water and spray.

Definitely a millipede. They're generally harmless but they stink as a form of self-defense, the smaller species like the ones you describe stinking worse than the larger species (there are at least two species around here that commonly grow to be as long as your finger) in my experience. Most of them eat rotting plant matter or garbage, so a poison spray or even powder should be effective if applied to their food source.

A centipede was happy – quite!
Until a toad in fun
Said, "Pray, which leg comes after which?"
Which threw her mind in such a pitch,
She laid bewildered in the ditch
Considering how to run.

The millipedes are harmless; the grandkids in Virginia find them in the woods, and pick them up—they tickle! They don't move fast.

You must have some place where there's rotting vegetation—in the cellar, or next to the foundation? Clean that up, and they'll go away.

Centipedes, on the other hand, can sting (or bite?); they scuttle and scare me.

Dennis,

Sounds like millipedes.

Aside from insecticides, to help get rid of them and prevent future infestations, you need to compromise its environment. That means, get rid of food sources, reduce humidity and seal cracks and crevices and such.

This site has the basics:

Here is the answer from the University of Arkansas:

The ones here are like the top picture. I sprayed cyflutherin around the outside of the house and it killed lots of them.

Dennis,

Repeats the same advice provided to you previously. Use the insecticide and compromise the environment and the millipedes will no longer be a problem.
