F/U: Volt rear camera stopped working. Fuse blew again
Posted by: space-time
Date: May 17, 2019 09:06PM
I replaced the 7.5A on Sunday, by Wednesday wife reported the camera does not work. It lasted only 2-3 days. I am quite busy this weekend and I think I will replace the fuse to buy 2-3 more days, but next weekend I plan to take the camera out and troubleshoot inside the house.

seriously, people did that and it did not help

[gm-volt.com]

2014 Volt - went to autozone - out of 7.5amp fuses - bought a 5 pack of 10amp fuses - "temporary OK" according to the AZ guy

replaced the F7 blown fuse with the 10 amp in the parking lot - backup camera and dome lights work!

by the time I get home F7 is gone again

replaced it again from the 5 pack of 10amp fuses

Lasts another 2-3 trips - blown again

Replace the wiring to the camera. Problems happen most often at connections and in the wiring itself. High amp draw,, which is what blows fuses, is due to poor contact or under-size wire. In the case of under-size wire it is caused by too many broken (or cut) strands. You could also have a bare spot on the wire that "floats" most of the time but can contact bare metal and become a direct short when moving.

I'm guessing that insulation is worn/cut and the hot wire is making contact with the car body someplace.

Since the camera is in the rear and the fuse is in the front, the wires need to pass through the hinge to the hatchback, and flex a lot there. That seems like the most likely area for a wiring harness issue.

Maybe it's 2-3 days before the hatch gets opened. Or maybe the car also needs to be turned on when the hatch is opened.

You could try removing or just disconnecting the connector to the camera and see if it blows fuses with just the wires but no camera connected to them.

Didn't you by this as a GM certified used car, is there any warranty left?

They're gonna need a bigger fuse.

Seriously, I think this august group knows that if it blows a fuse, going bigger is usually not the answer.

There we go.

I've only had one instance when a replacement fuse fixed an issue*. As we all might realize, a busted fuse is a clue to some other problem.

* I had replaced a fuse and that replacement also blew. It's a typical blade-type fuse in a mower. So I slightly bent the fuse blades with pliers in order to ensure better purchase when installed in the fuse holder. According to the Internet, the theory was that if loose fuse blades "flutter" around within the connections of the holder, the frequent connect-disconnect gets seen by the fuse as electrical spikes and so, it fries after a while. If nothing else the fuse is now not as loose as it was before. And it hasn't blown again.

What's more interesting (to me) is that this advice came from a mower manufacturer, when a customer said they'd tested the one thing aft of the fuse. So the fuse holder became the next thing to completely verify was OK.

And yes I'll be using this probably irrelevant example each and every time a future topic comes up regarding blown fuses. You're all welcome. smiley-signs003

Have you been able to diagnose the exact moment the fuse blows? That should give you some info on why it's happening.

You might consider wiring a 12V LED across the leads and try to note what's going on when it goes out.

Or is the display doing something when the car is in forward motion?

Operate all the switchgear, brakes, lights, turn signals, etc., while the car is parked with the engine running.

If that doesn't blow the fuse, head out on the highway...

It also seems possible that it has nothing to do with the backup camera. There are other things on that same fuse, might be any of them.

There seems to be a "Body Control Module" that is what the fuse/power goes to first, and that controls the other devices. Cars are becoming more like computers.

Fair point.

That makes troubleshooting more difficult.

And it could be the BCM itself.

I look forward to s-t's adventure.

OK, I am working on it now.

This video says he installed a new camera, but he does not show in detail how he mounted the camera in there. he removed the inside panel, but that's it. I did that and I cannot access the camera.

It seems like I need to remove the entire bumper like in this other video. That is a longer project, not something I can start on Sunday evening at 6;30 PM
