testing speakers without a stereo system

We were cleaning out the attic and I discovered a pair of HTD Outdoor Speakers that we had used back when we had a pool years ago. Now in addition to not having a pool, we no longer even have a stereo system. I'd like to try to maybe sell the speakers, but I'd also like to confirm they work and sound okay before I list them. Is there a simple way to test them without any kind of amplified source? I'm pretty sure my iPhone won't drive them. Would a TV do it?

You could try anything that has a L/R audio out -- assuming that's what the connection is on the speakers. I'd say "Ask a friend with a stereo".

.....it's all about the connectors......and the cables that you have.....and compatibility....it should work on TV if the connectors/cables are available....

Thanks. I guess I'll just cannibalize a couple of RCA cables by stripping the connectors off one end and try hooking them up to the TV.

Just realized that won't work because each speaker needs a pair of wires (two terminals) and the RCA cables are single wires per connector.

Unless those speakers have amplification built in, you will need some type of amplifier to test them. RCA audio jacks do not provide enough power to drive unamplified speakers.

It is what it is.

An old trick from my youth, connect the wires to a 1.5v battery, just brush the wires against the battery ends, you should get some static as the wires connect/disconnect.

It won't give you any clue about sound quality, but will let you know that they're not dead.

Pull off the wires from one of your car's speakers if accessible.

Or buy a super cheap receiver or amp from a thrift store and resell everything as a set.

or just sell them as-is for cheap

I like the car speaker idea. Or, just sell them and say that if they don't work the buyer can return them in X days.

car is a good idea but usually hard to access those wires

1.5/9V battery does not give you a clue about sound quality.

Either borrow a friend's stereo to test the speakers, or "if they don't work the buyer can return them in X days."

The last one is probably the easiest solution.
